My two grandchildren and I really enjoyed The Hunger Games. We saw it early last night in an audience-filled theater. We all think it's the best movie we've seen in a long time (and we see several movies a month).
My 12 year-old grandson and I read the books before we saw the movie. The movie seems to express the book's political theme well. Spoiler alert: It was difficult for us to see children fight, bleed, and die in the games. The action, suspense, good characterization, and fine acting kept my interest throughout the nearly two and a half hour film. The movie didn't seem that long and we are ready to see more.
My 9 year-old didn't read the books yet. Still she followed the plot and theme easily. She liked the story, especially the love story. She wants to read the books now, though the political theme may be too sophisticated for her at this time. Maybe not.
I recommend that you and mature children see this film.
