Rescuer of the Perishing

Jan 09, 2011 00:57

In a church in Los Angeles, where I grew up, there is an icon called Mother of God Rescuer of the Perishing. As a child, I sang the Akathist to the Rescuer of the Perishing. It's such a hopeful name for an icon, which is perhaps why, in times of trouble, I immediately seek out and silently (or in an undertone if I have more privacy) chant the Akathist Hymn. I don't know if it is a "proper" prayer to say without a priest... and honestly, I don't really care. (Sorry, priesty folks!) It comes naturally, it gives comfort, and it helps people.

I am deeply troubled tonight. I'm sure many of you are, too. The above link is for your reference, should you be interested.

I gave the following names in intentions, with appropriate prayers for repose of soul/health and help.

For the repose of the souls of:

Christina Taylor Green
Gabe Zimmerman
John Roll
and others killed in today's shooting

For the health and help of:

Ron Barber
Pam Simon
Gabrielle Giffords
and others injured and endangered in today's shooting
