luke's turn

this morning both Luke and Neely ran in a age division races at JSU. both times i had talked to Luke earlier this week, he reminded me that he was in a marathon and how he was practicing. they were both pretty excited and confident that they would win. Neely went first, she was kind of skipping along, smiling and waving, still came in first in her division.

When Luke's turn came, he had to walk all the way around to the other side of the track. When they came around the curve he was in 7th place, he looked so discouraged, but in one moment i saw it turn to pure determination. it was as if i saw his mind say, "i might not can beat them all but i can beat him." he kicked it into high gear and passed two boys before jumping over the finish line.

Luke is kind of a worrier. He wants things to be perfect; just the way he planned. he wants to do the right thing. there are so many years between him and his older (cool) brother Levi that he has a lot of oldest child tendancies. its fun to watch him with levi because he can let go of all of that, lose the pressure, and be silly. he has a quick wit (like his namesake) and loves to make people laugh. he is fiercely loyal and a thinker. if luke trusts you and calls you his friend, believe me he has got your back. he has an amazing imagination. he doesn't just go from the living room to the bedroom, he goes from international spy headquarters to jungle hideway.

Too bad they don't give out medals for those things...surely you'd come in first, Lukey.
