A Clockwork Orange, dissapointing?

Going into this movie I had some pretty high expectations. It's #64 on Best Movies of All Time at IMDB, #8 for Science Fiction. That and Kevin had also given it high regards if memory served, and for the most part we have similar opinions on movies (save foreign films, which he tends to hold in higher regard). That said I also started the film at 12:30, and was up til 3am watching it. But given these, I was not overly impressed.

For those who haven't watched it, I'll give you the base premise without spoiling anything. Basically the boy starts out as a very violent hoodlum who rapes women and beats up old people, the general hoodlum routine. He then goes to jail, and after some time spent there opts for a special new treatment which will make him good. Long story short it goes bad and some side effects occur.

I can appreciate that this film was different. I like the style of it, and the general theme. But it seems like that is the primary quality of it. It relies on fancy talking and classical music for the story. I anticipated some sort of social commentary, or perhaps philosophical questions to be raised, but any commentary seemed well drawn out, and any questions seemed answered in the movie, thus defeating any interesting afterthought.

I'm not to say it's a bad movie, and that it's not worth a watch, but it seems like it is held in high regard simply because it is a "masterpiece" rather than the quality of its content.

Bill and I had a small discussion and he put it in a way that fits my opinion.

qgapq: you've seen 2001 right?
LittleNastyDog: no i haven't
qgapq: well i would say what 2001 did for Space Clockwork Orange did for violence
LittleNastyDog: what?
qgapq: they are both just sort of mellow paced, music driven, romps through their respective fields
qgapq: I mean you watch both and you're like man this artistically is beautiful
qgapq: or what not
qgapq: and on the surface it is a masterpiece
qgapq: but you yourself don't feel overly entertained

If you have seen the movie, and agree or disagree, please do tell. Perhaps you can fill something in that I may have missed.
