There's something that's been bothering me for a while.

See, on my homepage, I have it set up to show me the top news stories from the UK. For the past 8 days or so, I've been following the story of a young British backpacker who turned up dead on holiday in Thailand. It really has been horrible to watch the story unfold, especially after they released photos of her and revealed that she went to the same university that Jonathan went to before transferring to Essex. As it turns out, they were good friends for the first term, though they drifted apart after 10 weeks or so. This story, which I had already found horrific and disturbing, hit way too close to home for me after that. I mean, normally you read about something like this and feel sad, but when it's someone you know, or even a friend of a friend's, it's absolutely wrenching. I didn't know this girl and I doubt I would have ever met her, but every new detail of the story leaves me speechless.

I don't know. I guess I feel like I can relate all too well to this story. If I looked at it from Jonathan's perspective, it would be like if one of my friends from 10th or 11th grade was beaten, raped, and murdered. I can't imagine looking back on pictures of a high school friend and knowing that he or she was dead. But maybe that's one of the horrible parts of growing up--understanding that the people who have touched you in your life, however slightly, may die... perhaps tragically and prematurely, just like Katherine Horton.

Anyway, that's what I'm thinking right now.
