So i read Colin's journal and viewed the clip about the racial slur... Last night one of our patrons at the bar was a little too drunk and when Jeff the bartender asked him to leave (it was past 2 AM at this point) a big racial argument erupted. Walter (the patron) left in an unhappy manor and proceeded to stand in the middle of the street.
At this point I had 3 ways of handling the situation:
a) let him stand there until he gets hit by a car
b) call the police to pick him up
c) call a cab for him
I went with C, though this man accused Jeff and myself of racism not more that 10 minutes prior, I invited him back into the bar and called a cab for him. When the cab arrived he was very gracious towards Jeff for handling his situation in the way that he did. And he was very appreciative of my helping him get to his destination despite the conflict.
I know that he was drunk, I know that Walter isnt a racist, but I know that our society has pounded a defensive racism shield into a large chunk of our population. But the best way that I have found to deal with it, is to ignore it. Play dumb to what racism is, ignore someones skin and look into there eyes when I talk to them. Walter said he would be back next sunday, and I kind of look forward to seeing him. He kicked some ass on the Karaoke last night...
