When I got to work today I was greeted with a very pleasant surprise. Earlier this week Transport had a Christmas party where those of us who participated in the secret Santa bit. Whoever drew my name didn't show, so I gave but did not get; I know Chris had me but he has yet to be to work in the last few days. Aside from Secret Santa a few people went ahead and did something for everyone in the department. Mostly just candy and candles. However, when I arrived today Hattie handed me a package. It wasn't a large package, but it was a surprise none the less. I asked what this was for and she said that she had done something small for everyone in the department for Christmas. As I opened the package I found it to be a scarf. Nothing fancy, just a black scarf embroidered with the letter "B" at the one end. I cannot explain how I felt, almost overjoyed. Someone who had absolutely no reason to give me a gift gave me something. It didn't matter if it was cheap or expensive, it was something useful and given to me from the heart. It made me feel special and appreciated. Not like when I get a gift at home. Don't get me wrong a gift from family is a wonderful thing, but there is something different when you get a gift from someone who is in no position to feel obligated to give you one.
