For all the Hockey fans on my F-list, especially __tiana__, since her team is actually taking part in the Winter Classic, I give you HBO's 12 minute preview of their documentary 24/7 Road To The Winter Classic:

OH. MY. GOD. I am SO excited for this I can't even find the words. It looks SO PRETTY, and I am not just talking about Brooks Laich! Yes, HBO over sells it and the players involved; yes, HBO did get Talbot's number wrong, but that isn't the point. THE POINT IS I LOVE HOCKEY AND IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL HERE!!! I am a big consumer of all things "behind the scenes", I love the process just as much as the finished product, and I also get a perverse pleasure out of knowing that my team kicked both of these teams out of the playoffs last season, so THERE! ... wait... what was I saying? Oh yes, THERE WILL BE PRETTY, PRETTY FOOTAGE OF HOCKEY!

Dear Hockey Gods, THANK YOU!
Next time could you make it the Canadiens?

NHL's Relive the Winter Classic Video

The idea behind both the Heritage and Winter Classic came from a game between the University of Michigan and Michigan State that was played in 2001. The game was nicknamed "The Cold War On Ice" and was played at Spartan Stadium at M. State. The game stared a number of future NHL-ers including Komisarek, Keith, Miller and Montreal Canadiens' Michael Cammalleri. At the end of the following highlight video you'll see baby Miller (who looks surprisingly like current Miller just with more body fat) and a chubby baby Cammalleri. \o/ SO CUTE!!!!

Cold War on Ice: U of Michigan @ Michigan State

Where it all began. Two bitter, cross-state NCAA rivals, Michigan and Michigan State, duke it out in the open air at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. The outdoor tilt, affectionately referred to as the “Cold War on Ice” is played out in front of a record 74,544 fans. Michael Cammalleri rises to the occasion, beating Spartans netminder Ryan Miller twice to put the Wolverines up 3-2 to start the third period but in a display of last minute heroics, Jim Slater pots the equalizer for Michigan State, bringing the final score to a 3-3 tie. The highly-anticipated outdoor rematch is set to take place on U Michigan turf this December 11. ~ NHL site

The First outdoor NHL game was played by the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers in 2003, and they called it "The Heritage Classic". The game was suppose to commemorate the heritage of the outdoor game in Canada (complete with old timer hockey game before the main event) and will be held again this season on February 20th between The Montreal Canadiens and the Calgary Flames. Truthfully, this is the NHL's way of making up for the fact that they didn't give Montreal their outdoor game for the the Canadiens' 100th season like was promised, and to attempt to appease those who believe the NHL board of governors to be America bias... it isn't working, but we are still happy to have the game.

NOVEMBER 22 2003, Heritage Classic: Montreal @ Edmonton

The Oilers and Canadiens make history, taking part in the first-ever outdoor game since the NHL’s inception in 1917. Donning balaclavas to keep warm in the frigid temperature, the feeling out process takes longer than usual at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. After a scoreless first period, Richard Zednik wastes little time putting the Habs on the board, notching the first open air goal in league history 39 seconds into the second stanza. Zednik pots another goal before the final buzzer and teammate Yanic Perreault also notches a pair of markers to lead the Canadiens to a 4-3 win. Montreal netminder Jose Theodore finishes the night with 34 saves to his credit, all while sporting a red Habs toque over his goalie mask for the affair. ~ NHL website
