For a good while now I haven't been feeling fannish about any series on TV. That isn't to say that I haven't enjoyed a lot of what I have been watching, but talking about any of them at great length is not something that I've wanted to do. Instead, all of my fannish attention has been divided between my first fandom, Hockey, and sound in film... which has resulted in a very empty journal and a lot of posting elsewhere.
I somehow managed to talk
zimshan into collaborating with me on some writing about sound and score in media, and with any luck our schedules will allow for it sooner rather than later. Also, I have spent a good amount of my free time at a hockey news community that I found during the playoffs last season, and that has been SO MUCH FUN, but a real time-suck all the same. I used to always talk to my dad about hockey, but he gets really anxious during games now and prefers to watch the replay once he knows the score. Poor, way too invested daddy! :D
I LOVE MY TEAM !!! They have a 12-5-1 record going into tonight's game against the Nashville Predators, and a 4 game winning streak, and I know that chances are that they will lose a game soon, but all I ask is that it is not Monday's game against the Flyers. I'll even take the Saturday game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and that is big if you know the rivalry between these teams and how bad the Leafs are playing. JUST. NOT. THE. FLYERS.
We've recalled Yannick Weber from the AHL for the game tonight, which is... odd. The rumor is that Jeff Halpern might be sitting out after a nasty hit from behind -- that wasn't called, thank you blind referees -- and possible concussion, but Halpern is a center and Weber is a two-way defenseman. 0_o The likely conclusion is that the rumor is wrong and that Picard, who is in the line-up to replace an injured Andrei Markov, will sit this one out, but he had a good game on Tuesday, so why would we do that to him? See... odd!
Okay, let's get back to why I LOVE MY TEAM! My guys are adorable together; they have rituals and bromances and they dress up for hallowe'en in amazingly embarrassing costumes just to make each other laugh. They genuinely LIKE each other, and more than one has said that this is the only team they have played for where they LOVE EVERYBODY! AND THEN THEY PLAY AMAZING HOCKEY AND WIN TOGETHER. \o/
CAREY PRICE
Okay, I admit it, I was a doubter! When the Canadiens traded Halak over the summer I was ready to burn down the Bell Center in protest -- hey, I'm a Montrealer, we like FIRE! However, after years of lacking commitment and focus, something finally changed in Carey Price and the result is AMAZING!!! He has allowed only 3 goals in the last 4 games, been awarded the Molson player of the month for October, and the Star of the week by the NHL for his 3-0-0 record with a shutout last week. And then, to top it all off he made 41 saves to shutout the Flyers on Tuesday, when they were the Orange-Goon-Squad that kicked us out of the playoffs in the semi-finals last season. LOVE HIM!!!
Check out his amazing save on LaRose in our 7-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Novemeber 13th. I don't know what is more awesome, the save itself or his reaction to it.

Chris Pronger of the Flyers has this childish habit of taking the puck when the Flyers lose a game so that the other team can't have it, and though he used to only do it for playoff games he took the puck for our game on Tuesday. Considering that it is Price's 3rd shutout of the season, a 41 save night, and our team's beating of the guys who kicked us out of the playoffs, our Captain (OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN), Gio and Gomez went after Pronger for the puck. Now... to really get the picture let me point out that Pronger is 6 1/2 feet tall, and Gio and Gomez are 5'7" and 5'9" respectively. They WENT AFTER PRONGER to get Price the puck, and SUCCEEDED! Unfortunately, Price didn't know what they had done, and being a goalie he doesn't have a fondness for pucks, so he threw it to a kid in the stands. LOL!
P.K. SUBBAN \o/
WHAT CAN I SAY ABOUT MY P.K. OTHER THAN I LOVE HIM TO ITTY BITTY BITS! Subban was brought up at the end of the first round of the playoffs against Washington and created a place for himself in this hockey team that I hope never goes away. I truly want Subban to spend his entire career here, and since he grew up a Habs fan I think he would agree. It is hard to believe that this is his rookie season; he shows such confidence on the ice and has no trouble creating room for himself when skating through traffic. P.K. is currently the talk of the town for two reasons: he is a dynamic defenseman who plays beyond his years, and because he is one of the most hated players by those on other teams.
Example: On Tuesday, after the Canadiens won 3-0 over the Flyers, TSN's Bob MacKenzie tweeted this:
@TSNBobMcKenzie: PHI's Mike Richards ripped P.K. Subban post-game for being a rookie showing "lack of respect." Heard clip on TEAM990 in MTL.
The reason the Captain of the Philadelphia Flyers had such a problem with Subban was because Subban got between Richards and Andrei Kostitsyn as a fight was breaking out, and then didn't back down to Richards simply because Richards has been in the league longer. Are you thinking cry-baby too? This is what happened exactly: Richards checked Andrei Kostitsyn after he sent the puck up the ice, Kostitsyn didn't like this and pushed him back. Richards responded by going after Kostitsyn when his back was turned, but Kostitsyn isn't a fighter, so P.K. stepped in between them, and then grabbed Richard's jersey when he was told to back the fuck off. The entire skirmish was halted before it started by referees, but the Flyers took this "slight" to their captain very seriously. In the third period Subban was the target for a ton of dirty play, including 5 slashes to the legs before a retaliatory slash by Subban stopped the play. Three different Flyers then went after Subban including O'Donnell who grabbed Subban by the visor from behind and pulled him backwards down to the ice. When all was said and done O'Donnell was sent off, and two other players were in the penalty box, including Subban. WTF?
Since Richards made his comments there has been non-stop discussion of both them and Subban on sports TV and radio north of the boarder, and the BEST PART was today when Phil Esposito (yes, Hockey hall of Famer, I played with Bobby Orr, Esposito) defended Subban and said that not only does he enjoy watching Subban play, but that Richards needs to get over it and take a look at his own team. HA! Take THAT!
The fact is that yes, Subban is chirpping on the ice, and so do a lot of players, and you are allowed to hate that style of player, but framing it in the fact that he is a rookie and hasn't "earned it" is ridiculous. He earns it every night he is on the ice, he paid his dues and is a full time NHL player now, you can't tell him that he hasn't earned the right to play his game in a style that others are allowed to play in. P.K. is a complete gentleman off the ice, he never says anything bad about another team, even the Flyers, and if a player can't deal with whatever he is saying on the ice then perhaps a little meditation or anger management is in order. Okay?
That entire game had its bias against us (in our own building) referee calls: there was the highstick to Gorges face that pulled his helmet half off his head, but totally unseen by the refs, and then there was the hit by Powe on Halpern that resulted in Halpern on the ice, sans helmet and needing to be helped off and checked for concussion. This was an obvious penalty and falls under two possible options: rule 41.1 Boarding, or 43.1 Checking from behind, but were either of these called? NO! Despite the fact that there are 2 refs and a linesman on the ice, none of the officials saw it. Now that I am thinking of it, they also didn't see Gionta get planted for no reason in the neutral zone when the play was 30 feet from him either.
However, even with the bias refs and the nasty-orange-goons bitching and moaning, we still beat them 3-0, and that included a goal by bad-ass Tomas Plekanec who didn't even look at the net when he scored. \o/ It only sucks that the only innocent guy on the entire Flyers team, SpongeBob Bobrovsky, is the one who suffers because that kid is a great goalie!
Outside of that one game we haven't had the best week ever, despite what the numbers say; we lost our top defenseman Andrei Markov just as he was coming back from knee surgery. Eric Staal of the Hurricanes got him knee-on-knee and that was all she wrote... I've declared Eric to be the EVIL STAAL, and now like his two brothers so much more than him. I hope that you get bed bugs in your jock EVIL STAAL!
And now, to cleanse this post of the negative, I give you, or probably just me since other than
goldy_dollar I can't imagine who is reading this, Triple-Low-Fives with P.K. Subban and Carey Price:
In other news, I have my source for
festivids watched and ripped, notes have been taken and a project file opened... now I just need a song. Yep, a month into the process and the song hunt continues. I am refusing to panic! However, that might be due to the fact that I am swamped with other things, and distracted by the new Harry Potter movie coming out at midnight. I couldn't get tickets for the midnight show, but managed to con a large group of people to go together tomorrow night, so that should be fun! :)
