Goodbye candy corn, Hola sugar skulls

Happy Dia de los Muertos to everyone, hope everyone had a great Halloween, judging from some of your pics posted and the ones I have read about that are to be posted soon it appears a good time was indeed had by all. Halloween weekend here was a somewhat more low key than one would have expected. Saturday was pretty much the same as every Saturday here except with Jack O' Lanterns thrown into the mix. When I was outside carving my pumpkin into the likeness of Elvis I had a guy that looked and acted just like "Shooter McGavin" from Happy Gilmore come up and drunkenly ask about buying the abandoned fish tank on our porch, so that takes care of that problem at least.

Halloween night Scott and I decided we would go check out the Elvis imitator singing down at the Metro bar since no trick or treaters were going to show up. After getting cleaned up and into suits, and yes, I do see the humor in us getting dressed in suits to go to a place called "The Metro", we headed out to our destination only to find tons of people just wandering the street the Metro is on for no apparent reason. There was absolutely nothing else going on that street or any of the others around it other than Elvis and it was obvious the crowd, which appeared to be composed of high school drop outs, heavy-metal-stoners, mall rats, and gangsta thug wannabes, obviously wasn't there to hear "Viva Las Vegas". I thought it was a "hey, so-and-so is going to rumble tonight on so-and-so street, we gotta check it out! Tell the other kids in 3rd block" type situation but it could have been anything really. All I do know is that people tend to back off when two ill looking guys in suits casually stroll through places they really shouldn't be, especially when they are outnumbered 50 to 1. Obviously they must either be crazy or bad-asses with a agenda, either way nobody wants to get involved. If they knew we were just there to drink and watch Elvis it might have been a different story. Inside there was a larger and different type of crowd than what is usually there, no bad but just different. "Elvis" was fairly impressive in sound and appearance, the only thing marring his stellar performance was the near constant interruptions from a drunk who thought it would be cool to take the mike and talk shit. After a few songs we decided to check out 1945 at the Nick but when we got there it appeared the venue was closed and everything was a bit creepy and too quiet. In fact, now that I think about it the whole town was like that, a little too deserted and too quiet. I assume it was because everyone was either at house parties or got all of their celebrating out of the way on Saturday or Friday, either way Birmingham was a kind of creepy on Halloween. After deciding there was nothing else were seeing we back home to finish the evening with hard cider, Brittsh documentaries, and Chris snoring on the couch.
