Title: Meant To Be
Rating: G
Word count: 176 words
Characters/Pairings: Marian, Robin; Marian/Robin
Prompt: Marian/Robin; childhood
Summary: They couldn’t have done any better if they tried.
Notes: Title comes from the song Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, but this isn't a Christmas fic. It is however, young-Robin/Marian fluff, so hopefully that makes up for it!

It had always been the plan for the two families to orchestrate a betrothal between their children. Arrangements were put in place, documents were signed, negotiations made - but in the end none of it was necessary. Perhaps it was the time their parents spent together, perhaps it would have occurred anyway, but the friendship between young Robin and little Marian bloomed so well that any formalities were completely discarded and the two children left to their own devices.

They couldn’t have done any better if they tried.

The forest became their playground, a secluded glade their ‘house’. The spread of fallen autumn leaves was their carpet, and tree stumps and fallen branches became furniture. When their parents stumbled across them one day, near desperation at having lost the young pair, the two children offered them rainwater to drink from acorn cups, set some berries on a leaf plate atop a log table, and asked if they would stay for their ‘wedding’.

Glances were exchanged above their little heads, and the parents agreed that yes, they would.
