Rating: PG
Word count: 187 words
Characters/Pairings: Isabella, mentions of Guy and Thornton
Prompt: Isabella; trust
Summary: People will change, scars will fade.
Notes: Title taken from the nursery rhyme.

Once upon a time she would not have hesitated at befriending everyone in the village, from the hard-hearted tax-collectors to the kindly old baker. Every inch the beloved little daughter of a benevolent lord, she could win over anyone with her big blue eyes and angelic smile, and many a time she had been warned that she was too trusting of complete strangers.

It was funny how things changed. How people changed. Once upon a time she would have dreamed of her wedding day, wished for it even. Now as her hand was passed from one man to another, from the brother she thought she could always rely on to protect her, to a complete stranger who could command her very being, she wishes it had never come.

Years later she looks back on her childish innocence with what she hopes is disdain, scorn at her former naivety. She dabs at the cut on her temple, watches the scarlet droplets of blood swirl around and stain the bowl of water before her, and knows it is envy.

People will change, scars will fade.

Memories will do neither.
