The night sky is a murky grey, cloudless, forbidding. Water from earlier’s rain seeps through the straw roof of the stables, icy droplets soaking the two figures huddled within.
The little girl shivers violently, wipes her runny nose with a filthy sleeve, and presses closer to the older boy. He removes his threadbare cloak and wraps it twice around his little sister. Through chattering teeth he sings her to sleep, rubbing her tiny frame to give her every ounce of warmth he can. He hears her shaky breaths fade into shudders, turns his eyes to the heavens of sodden straw, and cries.
