For the first time in a long while, she flinched at his touch.

He drew his hand back from her side, wondering what he had done to upset her. Unable to see her face, he asked, relieved when she reassured him he’d done nothing,

“Well, not nothing... But I’m as much to blame as you are.”

The confused look on his face wasn’t dispelled, even after she put her hand to her stomach, to the barely-there swell just beginning to show.

“I’m scared,” she confessed, her voice hardly above a whisper. “Suppose something goes wrong? My own mother died in childbirth, what if it happens again? What if-”

He cut off her hushed fears with a kiss to the corner of her eye where tears were threatening to fall.

“Shh...” he soothed, drawing her head to his chest and rubbing her back comfortingly. For the next few minutes they remained thus, him comforting her with his soft warmth and reassurances that she was strong - so strong - and that though it would be difficult she would pull through, and at the other end of the next few months she would be holding their child in her arms, “Just you wait and see.”

Only when Marian had drifted off did Guy let his true emotions surface. He held her as close as he could without waking her, his own tears hastily wiped away. After everything they’d been through, he couldn’t bear the thought of losing her.
