That depends on who the people I’m trying to please are.
For the most part, I believe in appreciation. Learning to be grateful for what you’ve got, even if your life is difficult in places. There’s no excuses for crutches, blame, or turning on others in hatred, or for clinging to those who have no place for you in their lives. So that would indicate a degree of siding with the “please yourself” argument. For we as people can’t please everyone, so if you cannot make everyone else happy, then striving to be happy yourself is a worthy goal. Appreciation is what my little games are all about, after all.
But when there’s someone I love… sometimes I admit I get a little foolish, or a lot. I do all I can to make them happy, even if it’s not always what I want. Not just making sacrifices and compromises to keep a relationship, but genuinely putting someone else I value ahead of me. It’s not the wisest of choices, but it’s one I’ve made from time to time.
I may set the rules for the game, but I have to admit, I don’t always abide by them. I’m human and flawed, after all.
