Ned was dreaming. That itself wasn't out of the ordinary. Ned did dream even if he didn't remember them when he woke up in the morning. This dream was different.
Ned could see his mother. Ned could see his mother alive. She looked vibrant and energetic, moving around the kitchen and chattering to him in a lively manner while she baked. Ned was there too, in his dream, except he wasn't young. He was older and he was smiling, letting the warmth of his mother's voice surround him. When she touched him, touched his cheeks and stayed alive, Ned could have started crying if he hadn't been so happy. He didn't even care what she said. He cared that she was touching him and wasn't lying prone on the kitchen floor because his touch was poison to her. He cared about her.
To anyone else, it might have been a boring dream but, for Ned, it was something that had him waking up quickly, breathing heavily and trying to get his bearings back. The dream stayed sharp in his mind. His mother. His lower lip trembled a bit and he felt guilt wash over him. What he didn't expect was the next feeling of warmth that brushed away the guilt. There was warmth and...comfort, almost.
And he felt a pull. An inexplicable want to go back to the island that he hadn't felt in some time. Ned shook his head and laid back down, breathing slowly. The warm feeling stayed. So did the pull back to the island.
