What I believe in - part 1
Robin and I got into one of those rather deep political conversations last night. I figured out one of the reasons why we get along so well. We pretty much agree on a lot of the main issues. That and he's so damned cute.
It also made me realize that I'm a rather conservative Democrat. Perhaps it's a by-product of my staunch Republican upbringing or perhaps due to growing up in Saudi Arabia. Who knows.
Hmm. I did live in Saudi for 8 years. That means I'm more than qualified to be Secretary of Energy. Woot!
I do feel compelled to post my stand on the issues for some reason. I'm just going to go with it. This make spark a bit of healthy debate or you may never speak to me again. Either way, here goes.
1) I am absolutely in support of women's reproductive rights. There are a couple of issues where I don't waffle one little bit - and this is one of them. Trust me to make my own decisions about my body.
On that same note, it's fine to teach teenagers about abstinence, but we shouldn't put all our eggs into one very leaky basket (no pun intended). Teenagers are going to have sex. That's a given. Teach them about contraceptive options, as well.
2) No waffling, part 2: Gay Rights. My best friend says I'm a hater. It's true, I am. I firmly believe that no one has the right to marginalize consenting adults who are in love because they don’t conform to society’s norms. That is horsepucky. Can you guess how I'm voting on Prop. 8, hmm?
3) I am in favor of the death penalty in capital murder cases. I believe that if you took a life (or lives) with malice aforethought, your life is forfeit. Thanks for playing. Buh-bye.
4) I believe in the Second Amendment. However, I don't believe a private citizen has a legitimate need for an automatic or semi-automatic rifle. I also believe that there should be background checks and reasonable waiting periods before being able to purchase a gun. But, with that right comes responsibility to store your guns safely. I also think Ted Nugent is a complete fucking nutcase who happens to be a decent guitar player.
5) I believe we need to actively explore and implement alternative energy sources. We should all do our part to help the environment. We've only got one planet and we need to take better care of it.
I find it inconceivable that with all of the incredible minds on this planet, that we are so dependent on fossil fuel. I know, that's a whole different argument about the grip of big oil.
