It's getting close to Halloween in Lichtenstein's world which means the days are closing up earlier and the nighttime freeze is working extra shifts. The colder it gets, the more tempting it is to move into the Nexus permanently. Like last time, he's sitting with a book in his lap. Except this time it has his own writing in it. He spins a worn down ( Read more... )

Sometimes I play the goofy, thick-accented German tourist to make people underestimate me.

Lichtenstein crooks an eyebrow and sits up a little, both intrigued and amused by the idea. "Oh yes? Does that work well?"

Amazingly well. I've had entire crowds in a club dismiss me after one loud, very German-accented shout of "Rock und roll!" If I say it right I can also give the impression of being somewhat drunk as well as enthusiastic. People are also a bit more tolerant of obnoxious behavior if they assume you don't understand the native language well either.

"Is that all it takes?" It's rare that he goes out for a drink, so this is fascinating news to him. He makes a quick note on the edge of his journal and then returns to the conversation. "It sounds like something you use often enough. What kind of people are you trying to trick?"

"Does it ever continue on too far?"

No, I tend to stop the joke rather early.

"Is it usually directed at you or..." He waves a hand, gesturing vaguely. "...Or your people?"

"Um, no, not really. Most of the misconceptions about my family aren't really that nice, and I'd rather people actually get to know me than think I'm evil just because of what I am and who made me."

Quint smiles then, a little sheepishly, and adds, "Besides, I never could get the 'dangerous Wilybot' misconception to really work for me. I look about as harmless as someone can get and still have all their limbs attached."

Lichtenstein looks the child up and down with a light frown. "That's a fair enough reason. Do many people consider you dangerous?"

"Well, a lot of humans on our world's Earth think Wilybots are dangerous. I guess it's justified, some of it, since we were designed as weapons. But... it isn't that they think we can be dangerous, it's that they think that's all there is to it. Like we'd just go and destroy anything we'd see." Quint rolls his eyes at that. "Most of us aren't that stupid."

Sunshine's grading papers - well. Sticking Halloween themed stickers to lined paper with clumsy alphabet characters scrawled on them counts as grading, right? She's doing that. She wonders why she hadn't noticed him earlier.

"Have you heard the lore in which vampires are ugly serial killers with no soul and no remorse for the lives they take? I'm pretty anti that stereotype."

Lichtenstein crooks an eyebrow at the papers, watching with amusement. The grading system involving letters is unfamiliar to him, which, to his disappointment, means he can't get a grasp on how her class is getting on.

"You're far more likely to get people believing that it's an act because of how abnormally cheerful you are. Vampirism isn't something that people will take lightly, despite any evidence to contrast its bad connotations."

"Would you like me if I was moody and pouty?" Pause. When she next speaks, it's an exaggeration of an accent made worse by her Southern one. "Or said that I vant to suck your blud?"

His lips press into a thin line as he resists snorting at her imitation of the accent. "Not personally. But you must have people who aren't convinced that you're a nice, relatively normal, person?"
