It's getting close to Halloween in Lichtenstein's world which means the days are closing up earlier and the nighttime freeze is working extra shifts. The colder it gets, the more tempting it is to move into the Nexus permanently. Like last time, he's sitting with a book in his lap. Except this time it has his own writing in it. He spins a worn down ( Read more... )

Sunshine's grading papers - well. Sticking Halloween themed stickers to lined paper with clumsy alphabet characters scrawled on them counts as grading, right? She's doing that. She wonders why she hadn't noticed him earlier.

"Have you heard the lore in which vampires are ugly serial killers with no soul and no remorse for the lives they take? I'm pretty anti that stereotype."

Lichtenstein crooks an eyebrow at the papers, watching with amusement. The grading system involving letters is unfamiliar to him, which, to his disappointment, means he can't get a grasp on how her class is getting on.

"You're far more likely to get people believing that it's an act because of how abnormally cheerful you are. Vampirism isn't something that people will take lightly, despite any evidence to contrast its bad connotations."

"Would you like me if I was moody and pouty?" Pause. When she next speaks, it's an exaggeration of an accent made worse by her Southern one. "Or said that I vant to suck your blud?"

His lips press into a thin line as he resists snorting at her imitation of the accent. "Not personally. But you must have people who aren't convinced that you're a nice, relatively normal, person?"

"Of course not. But these are the same people who find fault in anything that they don't personally approve of." She shrugs. "Sucks to be them, in my oh so humble opinion."

"In your case, it would probably also suck to be the child being taught those lessons. I take it that your boss is someone who recognises stereotypes as stereotypes and not the gospel truth."

She nods. "The veil's been down around us for a very, very long time. Our people have adjusted. But yes, she is, and I adore the ground she walks on."

"Once a prejudice is established it never dies out completely," he mumbles, tapping his book. Then he looks up to her again. "I'm glad she's good to you. What other misconceptions do you usually have to deal with?"

"Horny blood sucker with no wish to form actual relationships. Just.. restaurants."

"Restaurants? A blood sucker who wants to form restaurants?" He stops to think about the contrast of a vampire who loves food, a happily uncommitted bachelorette delighted by children, as well as a 'monster' being so charmingly lovely. For some reason he finds it very nice. "There are so many aspects about you that contrast each other so well... I think, despite your humble job and place in society, you're really one of the most colourful people I've come across."

"What do blood suckers drink, sugar?" Sunny asks almost silkily, a ghost of a smile on her face. She's charmed in spite of herself. He does that so well. "Not the sort just anyone can eat at. Blood doners, if you will."

"And.. that was some of your highest praise, wasn't it?" Cue a preen.

His head rises with his brow as he understands her meaning and he mouths an 'ah'. "That would certainly be... a... an adventure."

"Well, it..." The instinct to correct her halts quickly when he realises that yes, actually, it was fairly high praise. "Yes, I suppose it was."

She slips her glasses further up her nose. "And how does that make you feel?"

He frowns, confused by the question. "Should I feel something in particular?"

She chuckles. "No. You just.. nevermind."

That only deepens the confused crease in his brow, but he decides to put it aside. "Do you really want to open restaurants like that? Or is it just a thought?"
