oh, you heard me.

Ring, ring, ring.

What's that sound? That, my dear Nexus-goers, is the sound of your PINpoints, mobiles, rotary phones, phone booths, and other various communication devices ringing. Or buzzing. Or whatever it is that they happen to do.

do you answer? )

Koschei is the owner of a newly-acquired (relatively speaking) PINpoint, and, oh wow, he hasn't heard it ring before! That's neat! He presses the button that's now flashing, thinking it probably will do something, and then, look! He knows that voice! Where does he know that voice from? It's--

Oh yeah! "Big-Theta!" Or one of them, at least. "Hi!" He says this while the Doctor is still rambling, so whether or not it is heard is up for debate.

Then big-Theta asks his question, and Koschei is left with an odd expression on his face. Huh. Seems that 'right' and 'right' (and also 'write' for that matter) are completely different words in Gallifreyan. Match that with the fact that the Doctor didn't have a specific meaning one way or the other behind it when he said it and the Nexus translation field being a bit dodgy when via voice-only, and you are left with one very confused Koschei.

"The opposite of what?"

"The opposite of--"

The Doctor stops short of repeating himself, apparently just now hearing the greeting. He'd chalked the return question up to reception issues, his own inquiry not being heard, but a child (by the sound of it) using his childhood nickname - well, that's something else entirely.

"'Right', the opposite of right, it's - it's a play on Earth language. Sorry, who am I speaking to?" Because with that nickname and that voice, he's got an idea, but just to be sure.

And here we have an exasperated little nearly-eight-year-old sigh. "It's Koschei." Duh.

But, moving on, there are more pressing matters at hand. "How d'you get these things to call other people? I haven't had mine for long so I dunno how every little thing on it works yet."

"Koschei? No. Koschei. Very little Koschei, from the sound of it. You snuck away to the Nexus and never told me?"

Yes, yes, alternate universes. He's teasing, and hopefully Koschei can pick up on that. Then, he abruptly switches from baffled delight to science lecture. "I'm broadcasting the signal from the TARDIS - my TARDIS. What 'these things' are you talking about? Have you got a PINpoint?"

Hi Doctor. Have a non-plussed teen speaking with a heavy Welsh accent. "Will? I think this one's for you."

Oh, Wales. The Doctor has a love/hate relationship with you. But he likes Welsh people, generally. "No, this is for - whoever you are. Who's Will?" Pause. "You didn't answer the question." Is he a bit petulant? Maybe.

That's great. Bran has a loving relationship with Wales, hates everything else (so he says, anyway). "Will's Will," he explains, picking his way through the Nexus looking for his friend. "He handles the questions."

"But you just answered that question," the Doctor points out. The mechanical noises taper off with a sad sort of wheezing sound. "Why not the first one? It's more of an association, anyway, not really a question."

Toad's mobile is set to vibrate, and he is quite surprised to feel it go off since no one who has the number is in this dimension.

He takes it out of his pocket and stares at it for a moment before pressing the green phone button. "Yeah?"

He takes a deep breath before answering the Doctor's question, to give himself enough time to decide whether or not to lie. "Certain."

Ahhh, the wonders of TARDIS communications technology.

"Certain," the Doctor echoes after an equal pause, in which the bizarre mechanical noises cease. Not one of the answers he expected to hear, which makes it all the more... "Interesting. Would you mind explaining your, ah, reasoning, if you can?"

"Ah, well, when you're absolutely certain you aren't open to new evidence... you can't change your mind if the situation calls for it."

"You can't adapt." Quite a flaw in his book.

"Hm." The Doctor's a bit stuck on certain being analogous with right, because for him, it often is. (He's a lucky guesser.) It's not quite doubt colouring his words, but something more like intrigue. "You can be certain and be right, though. Adaptability is good, but sometimes it's not necessary."

Captain John will answer any call, because he's a message whore curious man.

"Left!"

"Good answer," the Doctor lauds, nearly drowned out by a grinding sound. "I know I asked for your first answer, but did you only think of 'left', or did you think of left and then something else?"

"Well, then I thought of ye olde standard...wrong," John leans back on the couch and crosses his feet at the ankles. "Why do you ask? What are you doing on the other end of the line anyway?"

Definitely a curious man!

"Fixing something," the Doctor says vaguely, and he sounds a bit farther away. He seems to realise this and raises his voice. "What are you doing, then?" Because he's nothing if not curious.

"You want to? Hm." The Doctor is many things, but he's not a proper psychologist, though he still finds that fascinating. "What was your conversation about, yesterday? Besides morals. Specifically." A pause, a creak. Hopefully that sound isn't coming from him. "If you don't mind."

"I can, and I quite agree - about not being keen on those sorts of topics, that is. Not at the moment, anyway." The Doctor's brimming with a sort of excited energy that he hasn't had in a while, and he doesn't feel like wasting it on deep conversations. "So! Wrong, but you wanted to say left. Does that say more about yourself, or whatever you happened to be thinking about before you were asked?"
