“Mister Padalecki, can you hear me?" The voice was softly comforting. "I’ve lowered the ambient light so you shouldn’t have a problem with opening your eyes.”
Jared blinked his eyes open. Light flared for a second and then reduced to a normal level. There was a harsh glare of as the lowlight coating on the optic kicked in making it seem like daylight in the darkened room. Red writing told him that his systems were all coming on line. Anti-dazzle active. Lowlight active. Targeting scope calibration in progress. Lines and lines of diagnostic information flashed past too fast to read. Crosshairs burst to life picking out various points in the room and giving him distance and inclination readings on every identified target.
Jared blinked away the dizziness, the red still visible against his eyelids.
The doctor, Doctor Jenkins from his name badge, reviewed the readings on his portable computer, his finger rolling down the screen following the readout. “I’ve got all your mods coming online. Just need to run through this by the numbers, Mister Padalecki. Let’s start with your eyes. Targeting scope should be active, yes?”
“Yeah, doc. Makes me a little dizzy but it’s on.”
“Good, good,” the doctor made some notes on his screen, “You can put it into standby mode by focusing on the TS symbol at the left corner of your vision.”
Jared looked left and saw the small logo at the very bottom of his vision. It took him a couple of tries to actually get everything centred enough to shut down the crosshairs. Just to test, he flicked his eyes down again and they came back online. Another glance and they were off. Jared nodded. The logo was far enough down that it wouldn’t be something that he could accidentally do but easy enough for him to flip on in an emergency.
The doctor moved closer, “Just got to check something.”
Taking Jared’s chin in his hand, he moved him this way and that, peering at something in the boy’s eyes. He leaned in real close until Jared could feel the breath against his cheek.
“Are you getting diagnostic information?” he doctor asked, moving Jared’s left and right.
“Yeah,” Jared was uncomfortable with the invasion and scooted backwards in the bed.
“Good,” Doctor Jenkins said, apparently satisfied. He backed up and picked up his hand held computer again, tapping in a note. “When I was going over this with your guardian, Mister Morgan, he stated that any optics modifications be invisible to observers. Element of surprise, as I understand it.”
“Oh, okay,” Jared hadn’t even thought of that.
“And you can see clearly?” the doctor asked.
Jared looked around the hospital room, “Looks like it would with the curtains open.”
“I’m not sure how much reading up you did on this before you elected to have the surgery done, young man, but there are a few items that I need to tell you about your lowlight modification.” He tapped the screen of his computer to bring up an image and then turned it around so that Jared could see it.
“The reactive coating works almost like photographic paper. It grabs all the light it can before relaying the information to your optic nerve,” the doctor said, tracing the path on the screen.
“The signal travels from there through the filters at the back of your optic modules and through a series of filters. These filters build the image back up, correcting any light related issues along the way,” Doctor Jenkins left Jared looking at the screen as he retreated towards the doorway.
Jared was playing with the Targeting Scope again, focusing in on specific letters on the screen and zooming in until they were all that he could see.
“This is also true for you Anti-Dazzle modification as well. While the lowlight enhances your view of the world around you, Anti-Dazzle compensates if someone were to,” the doctor flipped on the light switch, “suddenly do something like that.”
Jared registered the flash of light before his vision went dark. He tensed, but before he could say anything, his vision was back to normal. He could see as clearly as before but there was no glare off any of the metal surfaces in the room.
“It can be a bit unnerving at first, son, but you’ll get used to it. The Anti-Dazzle filter is just an instantaneous polarization of the coating,” the doctor came back to the bedside. “There are still times that you’ll find yourself squinting, especially for the first while, even though you don’t need to. It’s a learned response. Don’t worry about it. Most important piece of advice that I can give you is make sure that you don’t let the lenses get scratched. They’re a toughened polymer but they’re not indestructible,” the doctor pulled out a brochure and handed it over. “If you think you see any scratches or any blurred images, anything at all out of the ordinary, get your ass straight in here and we’ll get it sorted out. Everything you need to know should be in there.”
Jared looked down at the leaflet reading the title with a smile, “So You Decided to Upgrade!”
Doctor Jenkins chuckled, “Terrible titles every last one of them, but they do have all the facts in there. Your guardian should also be able to answer some questions for you as well.”
Christ, didn’t they ever consider that after waking up from surgery might not be the best time to bombard you with facts? Couldn’t they have given him a day or two to get used to the mods before handing him some brochures and kicking him out? Wasn’t like he needed to know how this stuff worked anyway as long as it did. His mind drifted back to the last time he’d been in this particular clinic.
When he’d turned eighteen, his dad had scheduled him for the surgery to get him the neuralware processor installed, along with all the basics, claiming that it was impossible to get ahead in the business world without some cyberware. And as it was, he had to agree. Everything from doors to computers needed data identification of some type. And he’d adjusted to that. He’d thought it was cool for the first couple of weeks, but then it had paled into the background. He’d planned on getting more cyberware but with recent events, it had brought everything into stark focus.
His hand was still splinted up but he’d had his stitches removed last week. He was still stiff and sore whenever he breathed, or moved, or even thought about moving. But he knew that it would fade until there were nothing but scars and memories. It was the memories that worried him. Every time that he closed his eyes, he was back on the stairwell fighting for his life. Every dream may as well be a slow motion replay of what happened but with a much worse ending. He was jumping at shadows, expecting everyone to be out to kill him. It was only JD’s constant presence and Megan and Chris’ occasional visits that were keeping him sane while he waited for the doctors to sign him off.
“Mister Padalecki?” the doctor was frowning at him.
Jared blinked, pulling himself back into the room and out of his thoughts, “Sorry?”
“Your arm, if you don’t mind?”
Jared warily held out his arm. Doctor Jenkins held it gently, the fingers of his other hand pressing lightly at the skinweave. The sensations were more subdued than normal.
“How does that feel?” asked the doctor.
“Kinda odd! It’s like it’s dull. Ya know when you’re wearing a long sleeved t-shirt or something, and someone grabs you, it’s kinda like that.”
Doctor Jenkins nodded, “Only to be expected. It will take a day or so for feeling to return at which point, it should feel like normal again. Now, if you look closely, you can see the weave.”
Jared brought his hand up to his eyes, looking closely at his skin. He could just about make out the knit pattern. The targeting scope zoomed in, giving him an in-depth view of the crosshatch pattern on his skin.
“That’s so cool!”
Kevlar woven into skin cells. It wouldn’t make him bullet proof, but it would take a lot more than a nine mil bullet to get through it now. The next guy that attacked, and even if JD tracked down whoever was behind these particular attacks, there would always be someone else just waiting around the corner. Jared wanted every advantage. Training with JD, martial arts lessons, the works, didn’t matter what it was, he’d work at it. This helpless feeling that he had now was the worst feeling he’d ever had and he needed to make it go away. He could feel the tickle of tears pricking at his eyes and brought his hands up to shield his eyes. He blinked a couple of times, trying to get rid of the itchy feeling against the new optics. Something new to get used to.
“Would you like me to come back later, Mr. Padalecki?” the doctor’s voice was soft.
Jared wiped at his eyes and sniffed hard, getting control of himself, “No, no, it’s okay. Just… Give me a minute and I’ll be fine.”
The doctor stepped away and tapped a couple of buttons on the computer, making more notes as he gave Jared some privacy. Jared wiped his eyes again and took a deep breath. He hated that all it took was a thought and he was an emotional wreck. Damn it, he wasn’t going to let the bastard ruin his life. Another couple of deep breaths and he was back in control, mostly.
“Right, doc, what’s next?” Jared asked.
“I think we can probably check your links first,” he said, putting his computer down within reach of Jared. “You see the patch of skin just inside your right wrist? If you run your finger over that, you should feel the seam.”
Running his finger over the area, Jared felt the slight difference in texture. He let his nail pick at the corner until the skin folded back to reveal the tiny ports. The small plug popped out as he flexed his wrist, ready for him to pull them the rest of the way out.
“Good, you managed to get it open,” Doctor Jenkins smiled, “And the connector plug has popped out, yes? Just pull it gently.”
Jared could feel the vibrations as the spool turned, letting the foot long cable out. The port at the end of the cable looked like the old FireWire plug which took Jared a little by surprise. He’d expected something tiny and high tech but as long as it worked, he wasn’t going to complain.
“I have a diagnostic port in my laptop, if you can just plug yourself into it, I’ll check that it’s running as expected,” the doctor informed him.
Jared leaned down to look for the port along one side and then the other. It was right at the back. It was a little awkward plugging it in with his left hand but he managed, and without knocking the computer off the bed as well. A dialogue box appeared on the screen in front of him asking him if he wanted to start the testing, and at the doctor’s prompting, Jared eyes settled over the green button, putting the crosshairs over the centre of the icon.
His vision flickered for a second before red writing scrolled across his vision asking if he wanted to initiate vision-in-vision. Jared looked at the ‘yes’ text, focusing on it. The writing disappeared to be replaced with a video feed from the laptop’s camera showing him on his hospital bed. He moved left and right and watched video him doing the same. The doctor peered at the screen, reading the text scrolling up. Eventually he nodded and asked Jared to concentrate on the disconnect icon and unplug himself.
“You can, of course, vary the settings to have the video feed appear instantaneously. There are a multitude of settings that you can go through. What we’ve set up is the default listings. It’s a little trial and error, but again, I’m feel that Mister Morgan would be better equipped to help you with that. I’m not very knowledgeable on the weapons modifications, I'm afraid,” the doctor apologised. “I’ll leave the interface disks with you before I leave.”
“Thanks, doc,” Jared said, as he let the cable automatically retract back into the correct place and smoothed the skin back into place.
“That brings us to the last item,” the doctor picked up his computer again and tapped the screen. “Your embedded blade. This was a rather custom piece but I have to admit to agreeing with your reasoning. Having something that cannot be removed seems sensible, if you forgive my saying so, Mister Padalecki.”
Jared didn’t answer. He was back on the fire escape fighting for his life. If only he’d had something with him, something that he could have used to defend himself.
“Yes, well,” the doctor brushed over his patient’s silence, “this one may take a little practice to get the hang of. If you clench your fist as tight as you can and then flex your wrist a little, it should just pop out.”
Jared tried to do as the doctor said but nothing happened. He tried again, clenching until his nails were digging into his palms and then wiggled his wrist up and down. He jumped as the nine inch mono-edged stiletto blade snapped out from between his second and third knuckles. He expected some pain but the mechanism was completely smooth. He ran a finger around the base of the blade, where it parted his skin. There was no blood, no sign of trauma, nothing, but it felt wrong. He ran a finger over the skin at his wrist and then over the skin between his knuckles, it was the same.
“Ah yes,” the doctor said as he noticed what Jared was doing, “We installed a little pseudoskin there to cover the sheath. When the knife is ‘safed’ it’s almost invisible. We moved a couple of bones in your hand, so we could fit it in but there shouldn’t be any problems.”
Jared moved his wrist again, unclenching his fist and the blade disappeared back into the sheath. He couldn’t help trying to rotate his wrist. There was little loss of mobility but nothing that he couldn’t cope with or learn to compensate. Honestly, it was a small price to pay for having a means to defend himself or to defend Megan. If only he’d had it that night…Least now he wouldn’t have to rely on anyone else for his family’s safety. JD would teach him how to use it and if anyone threatened him or his again, wham!
“Well, I think that’s us done,” Doctor Jenkins announced, “Everything has been installed correctly and is working as expected. Give them a test over the next couple of days before you’re released and have the staff page me if you have any problems, otherwise, I’ll see you for your three month check-up.”
Jared thanked the doctor for his time. And then he was gone, leaving a collection of disks behind him that Jared assumed were the disks for his cyberware. He turned the jewel cases over in his hand, not really looking at them.
He hoped that this would turn the tide, give him back a little control, but he didn’t think it would be that easy. He knew that JD was hitting the streets tonight trying to get a lead on the guy from the nightclub and from there, whoever was behind this whole thing. Maybe if they found the guy, that would be it for now, but Jared knew that there’d always be someone else gunning for them. Time for them to find out that he wasn’t an easy target anymore.
