On the Dresden Files

From week to week, I grab the torrent for the Dresden files and once it downloads, it sits on my hard drive and I find myself staring at it, not really wanting to watch it. The first few episodes were good but the main character doesn't grab me and seeing as he's the focus of the show, that strikes me as a bad thing. The "bad guys" are interesting. Bob is interesting but Harry just makes me want to throw things at the screen. Maybe it's because they aren't laying the background - the high council, the enforcers etc. Or maybe it's the completely uninspiring acting but ... it's just not impressing me.

But this evening, I watched the first episode of Blood Ties (No not the cheesy 90's movie - but the new supernatural show) and quite enjoyed it. It had some of the nice and well done overtones that come from the first couple of Anita Blake books but it's still very different. Basic premise is that Vicki, the heroine, has left the police force to become a private detective and witnesses a crime. The girlfriend of the victim hires her to look into it because the PD won't believe her when she says a vampire is behind it. One thing leads to another and Vicki finds herself caught between two men (á la Richard and Jean Claude but a little different) and in the middle of a royal clusterf***. There were a couple of really interesting concepts in it but it was relatively cheesy. But still much more enjoyable than Dresden Files, for me at least.

I wonder whether it's just the difference between male vs female lead characters and the makeup of the supporting cast. I wonder this because most men that have seen Dresden or read the books seem to like or love it whereas most women tend towards the meh! Do we need to go back to the days of Mulder and Scully and the dual lead phenomenon again? Or is it the mix of mundane lead vs magical lead? Ideas on a postcard...

Either way, I'm off to enjoy the next episode of Criminal Minds.
