I wasn’t able to watch Merlin before now, so sorry it's kinda late.
I love crackisodes! I have many fandoms that are Less Than Funny, and I love the episodes that decide to funny it up. Like in Supernatural. My three fave episodes are “Yellow Fever”, “The Monster at the End of this Book” (which is cracky in a meta way), and “Changing Channels”. I’m not saying this is going to be my favorite Merlin episode or anything, but I definitely enjoyed the humor.
Other things I enjoyed:
Geoffrey! We haven’t seen him in forever! I love how very prim he is, such as when “Gaius” (how I will refer to the goblin in Gaius from now on) told him he was fat. He did this “Oh my lord!” type of thing and it made me giggle.
The goblin! For most of the episode, I’ll admit. I didn’t like it when he put people in real danger and I didn’t like it when he GAVE MOTHERFUCKING LEON BOILS (have I mentioned that I ship Sir Leon/Myself before? Where is the fic for this? Fandom, get on it. I need Sir Leon/Me fic like BURNING.), but he was hilarious. Even when he was “Gaius”. Although I have to admit that Richard Wilson was creepy as hell as the goblin. Like, seriously.
But I mean, come on. Bald Uther? Farting royalty (and Gwen)? I literally cackled. It was terrible! And when “Gaius” confronted Morgana, it was a serious win moment. I loved him at that point.
I also loved the heck out of Sleepy!Arthur. And Sword Fighty!Arthur. And Being Attacked by the Bed!Arthur. And Arthur the Ass. So much.
And Merlin was adorable in this episode. Especially at the end. Because there is nothing cuter than Post-sadness Happy!Merlin. And, I mean, when he was convincing Gwen that there was nothing wrong with farty girls because everyone does it? I mean, okay. TMI, but I am a gassy person and sometimes I cannot escape the room in time, you know? It’s nice to have this addressed in a way that is about as positive as you can be. One thing, though. Slow-mo? At the end, they went slow-mo when he was spitting the goblin back in the box. Silliest thing I’ve ever seen. Merlin? Don’t do that again, K?
There were fewer things I was less fond of, but I feel I should mention a few.
For instance, the gold the peasants were paying with? Okay, I know that Merlin is less than accurate in all possible ways, but there is no effing way that peasants would have gold. Especially not gold coins that big. They would, at best, have a few coppers, which would be useless to the goblin.
Arthur arresting Merlin and not believing him right of the bat. I mean, COME ON, Arthur. We have been through this before. It is nothing new. You should have at least convinced your father to look into Merlin’s suggestions, not just gone off and made an ass of yourself. I am going to get full use out of this pun, so shut it.
Watching Gaius die. I know it was really “Gaius” at first, but it was still Gaius that Merlin and Gwen had to watch stumbling around, and afterward watch as they waited to see if they’d gotten the correct antidote. It’s still a sad thing and I made me super sadface.
Next week! Do not continue reading if you don’t want to be spoiled.
OKAY. OKAY. Isn’t Gawain Arthur’s canon cousin? Or, according to Wikipedia, the nephew? I’ve been looking forward to Gawain coming into the show for this very reason. But no, they’re going to make him into a villain? What? I do not approve of this at ALL. I am, in fact, most displeased. I would like to register my complaints to the internets: GUYS. CALL ME A WHAMBULANCE, OKAY?
