A Very Shitty Christmas

Dec 26, 2006 09:52

Alright, the holidays are finally over, and I couldn't be more fucking glad. Fuck you, Christmas and all your off-shoot holidays (Choneka and Kwonza, etc.)

First off, on Friday (technically Thursday, but I didn't find out until about an hour before I had to leave), I gave my computer the gift of a virus. It naturally de-gifted most of it, but decided to keep one trojan (I think we all know what THAT's for), the spyware (what an exhibitionist), and apparantly a rootkit (I don't even want to know the fetishes THAT satisfies).

So, I'm still working on cleaning up that mess.

But the virus caused me to be so distracted that I forgot one vital thing for the gift-giving holidays: the gifts. I left the best ones back here in Lincoln, so I'll have to get those out to their recipients somehow.

Then the cat thing (apologies for bringing it up; I didn't realize it had already been written about when I wrote about it).

Then the coming home to slave over the computer, continuing to try and fix the problem.

So here's the summary of what's been found:

AVG Free Virus Scan: clean
Spybot Search & Destroy: clean
AdAware: clean
Eweidos Spyware Blaster: clean
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool: clean
Panda ActiveScan: some spyware (probably cookies, but I'm not sure) and 2 hacker/rootkit problems.
Update @ 2:27 PM: Microsoft Rootkit Revealer: clean
Update @ 2:45 PM: Trend Micro HouseCall: found TSPY_CIMUZ, which attaches to IE, which makes sense, cuz any time I tried to visit AdAware or Trend Micro in non-safe mode using IE (I have to use it in order for Trend/Panda to use the appropriate ActiveX controls), it freezes or crashes. Says there's a high system impact, but I don't know if this is THE one, since I've already cleaned a bunch of other stuff I thought was THE one.)

I wasn't able to complete the Panda scan; not that it matters too much, cuz I'd have to pay them for them to clean it, anyway. So yeah, every program out there except Panda now comes back clean. I'm going to try to use the Microsoft Rootkit Revealer over lunch. Hopefully that's the ticket. Blag.

spyware, holidays, rootkit, virus, christmas
