x-posted, because I am desperate to find someone else to talk to about this book.  From my limited knowledge of the cultures in question, this looks to be a successful case of "writing the other," and I am extremely interested to hear what folks who are more knowledgeable than I have to say about it.

Angry Robot (famous for actually putting poc in the cover art for their genre fiction books, like Broaddus' Kingmaker) has left Harper Collins and is now part of Osprey publishing.

So. I read Moon Called by Patricia Briggs. It's the first book in a series that is sort of a mix of urban fantasy and romantic paranormal adventure. The lead character, Mercy Thompson, is a shapeshifter who can turn into a coyote (the book uses the terms "skin walker" and shifter). She is also half native.
