Christmas time, London, 1980:

They hadn’t spoken in days except for the occasional frosty request when Lilly had shanghaied them into finally setting up and decorating the tree. The redheaded witch was worried about her friends and had cornered Remus earlier to tell him exactly why. None of what she had to say had come as a revelation; with the war only worsening and the recent news that there was a spy in their midst neither Sirius nor Remus were exactly filled with the Christmas spirit. The increasing workload for the Order sucked away any spare energy or time they might have had, making them both increasingly short tempered with each other. It was all a little predictable, so Lilly had claimed. Watching his lover from the door to their little kitchen, the dark head bowed under the soft glow of the muggle fairy lights strung on their tree as though it were a physical weight, he wished that she’d bothered to enlighten them earlier. Behind him he heard the milk beginning to boil and he turned away gratefully.

Maybe all he was doing was pouring and mixing chocolate powder with the last of their milk, but Remus took the opportunity to try and put aside his own dark thoughts. If they were both wallowing, they’d only succeed end up dragging each other deeper into their own personal hells anyway. There had been enough of that recently. When the sweet smell of cocoa filled the kitchen, he scooped up their mismatched mugs and went out to face the dragon. Sirius didn’t move when the werewolf sat next to him, close enough for their shoulders to touch if he leaned into it. He didn’t even acknowledge his presence until something hot was pressed to his thigh and midnight blues flicked to the steaming mug of milky hot chocolate he was being offered.

“What is it?” Sirius asked dully, reaching for it with hands that shook a little. Why hadn’t he noticed that earlier?

“Chocolate. You looked like you could use something hot and sweet.”

Sirius looked up at him wordlessly for a moment before the nearest thing to a smile either of them had seen in a week passed across his handsome face. And then, quite deliberately, he leant against Remus’ side, his long fingers coming up to cradle the mug in a mirror of his lover. A tension he hadn’t been aware of in amidst all the others loosened and slipped free; it was a good feeling. Just as good as the lack of recoil when he pressed his thigh against his lover’s and Sirius didn’t flinch away. For a few minutes they sat together in the glow of the fairy lights, quietly sipping their scalding hot drinks until Remus turned his lightly silvered head toward Sirius and asked softly. Eventually they started talking, sharing their burden and helping alleviate others and didn’t stop until long after the remaining hot chocolate became undrinkable.
