If Jesus is the reason for the season, so it goes, then why do so many local churches cancel the evening service when Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday? Maybe because what I contend is true, and that the holidays are really mostly about spending time with family, not worshipping God? People spends loads of time out shopping for presents and decorating with items taken from European pagan traditions, and yet still at least some churches cancel services when they realize that people would rather be at home enjoying comradarie with the ones whom are most important to them than couped up in a boring old church. INTERESTING.
In some ways I am glad that my beloved and frustrating Colts have had such a nasty time of it here at the end of the season. It has lowered my expectations for what they will do in the playoffs. It is hard to imagine them doing very well with a run defense that is completely broken. Nevertheless I will be watching.
For some reason the Sci-Fi channel has still not ran the first season of Battlestar Galactica. I've been waiting for close to a year, it seems like. I refuse to pay their price for half a season of a show on DVD. So I found a nice site with very detailed summaries of the episodes. I have read nothing but good things about the series. The plot is complex, with the writers dealing the the grey areas inherent in any conflict. I am looking forward to finally actually watching the show.
Amanda also finally purchased our Christmas present from my parents. This past Thursday she finally located a Nintendo Wii by catching the shipment just after it came in to the EB at the mall where she works. As I type she is in there playing Zelda, which was part of her present from yours truly. It is amazing how much technology Nintendo has packed into a system that looks like just an external CDROM drive. I think it is hilarious that you could much more easily find PS3s than Wiis before Christmas. It is heartening to see that at least one company hasn't forgotten that a Video Game system is just a toy, after all. I also really like that Nintendo is honestly trying to change how we interact with games, rather than just make a more powerful machine with prettier graphics. From the retailers my wife and I have talked too, Nintendo has a very good Christmas season. They couldn't keep Nintendo DSs in stock either.
I took Amanda to an establishment that I was a little bit shocked to find here in Chattanooga. The English Rose Tea Room is located downtown, and as the name suggests is a traditional English-style tea room. I found out they do little girls' tea parties, which strikes me as the most adorable thing EVER. The tea was delicious, though I at first had trouble gripping the dainty handles on the cups with my hands being used to giant mugs. They also had a retail shops selling all sorts of tea and tea paraphenalia. I really enjoy finding unique establishment like we have downtown, as opposed to the cookie-cutter places you find in the more retail heavy areas of the city.
Later!
