It takes me a few days to make up my mind about a movie. We went to see Silent Hill on Monday, as planned. The movie is good enough for fans of the series, but really not that great to be honest. It ends up having the feeling of an haunted house, like each scene is a set piece. The monsters also lack the context from the games, and are pulled randomly from the various incarnations. It definitely seems often like the movie was just an excuse for fans of the video games to say, "hey I recognize that!" That said, overall the film does capture the overall creepy ambience of the games. My favorite part of the movie is how the town melts away during the transition from creepy ghost town to extra-creepy hellscape ghost town. The creatures themselves look great, as do the special effects throughout. I can't figure out though why they seemed to have removed some of the more interesting story elements and context from the first game, to make in the end a far less effective experience.
I have had a chance now to hear the first new Tool single, "Vicarious", a number of times. My lovely (and pregnant) wife remains unimpressed and thinks it sounds the same as every other Tool song, and she is essentially correct. As you go through each Tool album, they just because more and more essentially Tool. I doubt I'll ever be truly surprised by a Tool album, there are just certain qualities that make up the band's sound. Either you like Tool, or you don't. They are one of those bands that hardly anyone says is "ok", most people seem to either absolutely love them, or just have no use for them. Vicarious, though, seems like one of their heaviest songs yet. Danny Carey is one vicious drummer, and still in my opinion the best in rock. The new album comes out this Tuesday, and I'll definitely be there to buy it.
Also we purchased Final Fantasy: Advent Children, but still haven't had time to watch it. We'll probably end up watching it tomorrow night, after Amanda gets off from work. I hope it is good. Final Fantasy 7 is still probably my favorite game ever, despite all the weaknesses. I'm not even sure why it has stuck with me so strongly over the years.
I'm rooting from three teams in the NHL playoffs. The Canadiens are my team, and are up two games to one over the Hurricanes. The Flames are tied in their series, and the Predators are down three games to one after winning their first game. I just wish more of them were televised here. I hope as the playoffs progress more games will be shown.
Oh, and another music note. The first single from Jack White's new band, The Raconteurs, is darn awesome, like every other thing I have heard from him.
Later!
