The halls of the hospital were dimmed as the woman slowly made her way down to the room, silent except for the quiet clinking of her jewelry. She moved so gracefully and looked so ethereal that the sole night guard-- still drowsy from a stolen nap-- had been sure he had imagined her. By the time he had come to enough to think that maybe he should have stopped her or asked for some kind of identification, she had already turned the corner and was out of sight. Not that he really had anything to worry about; she wasn't planning on causing any sort of mischief. She wasn't even going to stay very long. She had just one thing to do.

The face of the old woman who lay in the bed was blank and expressionless, and that didn't change when the young woman entered the room. She had only just been removed from life support that evening, after having been in a coma for nine weeks. The younger hadn't visited at all during that time-- though part of her had wanted to, she reasoned that the elder would have preferred to be remembered in a more lively, vibrant state. Still, today it was now or never, and she hadn't wanted to miss her last chance to say goodbye.

The room was empty, as she had suspected it would be; though she had calmed down considerably as she grew, the older woman had never been one to make a lot of friends. Anyone who would have been by her bedside had either died or been lost track of (unfortunately, both possibilities were equally common).

"It's good to see you again," the younger woman said conversationally, taking a seat on the edge of the bed and reaching for her companion's hand. "I've been waiting for the right time to come."

And so she sat, hours going by without a word being spoken. She wasn't here to talk to someone who could neither hear nor talk back, she was here to keep company one last time with a soul that had often needed company in the past.

At the end of the second hour, that soul marked its final departure from the world with a low, unbreaking tone from the heart monitor. That was the younger woman's signal to leave. Standing, she let go of the elder's hand, reaching forward once more to fondly tuck a stray piece of grayed hair back into its topknot.

"I'll see you again soon, Azula," Lilith said quietly, leaning over to press a soft kiss to her forehead. "I hope you will wait for me."

Then she turned and left the room, feeling no need to look back.
