Nice to see you again, Captain [Jim and Bones]

When Leonard had suggested that he and Jim pretend to be strangers, he had meant it as a lark, just to get rid of the awkwardness that had seemed to follow them from the Mojave. But it had turned out to be a great idea, a way of seeing each other through fresh eyes. The Jim Kirk that he took to the movies and walked hand in hand back to his house had lost a lot of that youthful swagger that initially irritated Leonard, though he was privately sure that swagger was still in there, just a little quieter due to the incidents of the past month.

But that maturity that Jim showed him, a measured self-assurance that came with leadership, that way he held himself - Leonard found that insanely attractive and he had a difficult time keeping that under wraps. They'd had a good enough time that they agreed to a second date, and true to their roles, they hadn't contacted each other as they might have normally done.

[It occurred to him that they should try this with Spock sometime, individually or together. "Mister Logical probably won't play along," Leonard snarked to himself as he finished dressing.

Still, it was an idea. ]

Though he hated not talking to Jim, Leonard admitted to himself that he'd needed a couple days to get his own shit back in order. House issues and work communiques and correspondence from family and friends. He spent an hour on the telephone with Joanna, listening to her go on about school and friends, and then took a nap after some much needed house cleaning. When he awoke, the chronometer told him it was time to start getting ready. Jim had said to dress up a little, so he dug into the back of his closet and found a nice shirt that he hadn't worn in a long time. Luckily it was pressed, so he added a pair of dark pants and took a couple extra minutes checking how he looked and smelled.

Now just waiting. He opened up a journal, tried to get some reading done but it was hard to concentrate on the words, swimming on the tablet in front of him.

we're on a date, jim..., san francisco
