"Olivia, what's that?" Leonard knew something was wrong when he woke up on Christmas morning without a little hand tugging at his face, or jumping between him and Jim.
She was in her pajamas, sitting on the floor by the Christmas tree in their living quarters, cradling something small and gray. "It's a kitty."
Leonard looked over at Jim, leaning against the doorframe. "Where did you get it?" Jim asked, curious.
"Santa," Olivia answered matter-of-factly, petting the purring piece of fluff nestled on her lap. "She was on my bed this morning when I woke up. Her name is Kitty."

"Meow. Meow."
Leonard frowned. Kitty didn't want any milk, or water, or kitten kibble that the replicator managed to create. All the kitten seemed to want was Olivia, but they had sent her to her room to play while Jim and the others went over security tapes. No one understood how the animal got into the Captain's quarters, more specifically his daughter's room.
"Meow." Kitty scratched at Leonard's hand, trying to get free.
"Ouch, dammit." Leonard dropped the cat, who scurried as fast as she could toward Olivia's room.
"Kitty!" a little voice cried. "I love you, Kitty!"
Leonard sighed.

"Meow."
Five men stared at the kitten, sitting on the table looking back at them with huge gray eyes.
Sulu reached out, touched it, Spock's eyes narrowing at that contact. "Perhaps it is an attempt to learn about our culture," he offered.
"Or our weapons," Scotty chimed in, looking serious. Jim scowled.
"Maybe its some alien who got lost," Leonard suggested, glancing over at Jim, who just growled low. "I mean, it can't be a real kitten."
"Maybe it was Loki." All five men turned to look at Olivia, suddenly standing next to Jim. "Can I have Kitty back now?"
#4
"Loki?" Jim knelt in front of Olivia while Spock took possession of the kitten. "What do you mean Loki?"
Olivia looked scared at the look on Jim's face. "He's my friend," she said in a small voice. "He visits me in daycare school." Her eyes got big as they looked down at her, her bottom lip wibbly. She sniffled, blinking. "I want Kitty please, Daddy..."
Leonard reached out, lifting her onto his lap. "What does Loki tell you, sweetheart?"
"He does magic and tells me stories about Asgard. He said I was a princess, like you said," she added, smiling.

Jim, Spock, and Leonard sat around the table, staring at the cat. Olivia and baby David had been bundled off to visit Paula and her son, giving them a little time to process what she told them.
"Jim, despite our past dealings with him, we cannot assume Loki's presence is hostile." If Spock was disturbed by mention of Loki, he didn't show it. Then again, he didn't show much. "If he wanted to injure us, he could have done so at any time. This appears to be... personal."
"How long's it been since you talked to your dad?" Leonard asked Jim, too quiet about all of this.
"Little over two years," Jim said. There had been a hole in time, and Donald Blake was needed back on Earth as Thor, to fight with his Avengers. "Loki left with him, that's all I knew. He didn't respond to my messages about David. Don't even think he knows about him yet."
"Oh he knows." All three men turned to see Loki sitting on their sofa, resplendent in green robes. "He's fashioned a small hammer for the child," he added with a worn sigh. "The man doesn't understand children at all, never has."

Jim stood, followed quickly by Spock. "What's going on here?" Jim asked, approaching Loki with caution. Leonard saw Spock's back straighten as Loki stood, a warm feeling inside at that protective gesture.
Loki smiled at them all, enjoying their discomfort. "A gift for my niece. She's a beautiful girl, James, Leonard. You must be very proud."
But they weren't smiling. "Why are you visiting her at all?" Leonard asked. He picked up the cat. "And what is this?"
"It's protection, Leonard, haven't you learned anything here in the black? You of all people should know, the dark and the danger..."
#7
"Bad things are out there, trust me," Loki's eyes narrowed, "I know. This kitten will watch my kitten, look after her, let me know if there is danger. They're family, cousins of a sort." The smirk on his face should have been comforting. It wasn't.
"Look," Jim began, but Loki stopped him.
"James, Leonard - Olivia is special, make no mistake. Even I don't know where her path will take her. No sense worrying your fragile mortal heads over this." Loki's hand brushed Leonard's shoulder as he leaned in toward Jim's ear. "Right now... just let her enjoy the cat."
