Having the guys over... [Jim, Bones, Chris, Zach, Karl]

Dec 18, 2010 16:32

Bones had gotten up early that morning, butterflies in his stomach as he left a sleepy Jim in bed, wrapped up in sheets and pillows. But a mug of strong coffee on the porch and the beautiful Risan sunrise wasn't enough to settle the thoughts in his head. He couldn't have explained why he was nervous at the idea of showing off his home to the Chris ( Read more... )

Karl missed the turn-off to Kirk and Bones' place. He turned around, and managed to miss it again. And a third time. It may have been on purpose that last time, on account of the fact that he fucking loved his futuristic spoke-less rental motorcycle (which his wife would not let him have at home because she thought he would crash and crack his head open...) so much, he couldn't resist another little whip down the empty beach-side road.

Eventually he did arrive, though, wind-ruffled and the wheels kicking up sand like crazy, but in one piece. He parked next to Chris and Zach's rental cars and dug out the bakery box he'd brought, and jogged toward the inviting little beach house, waving at the guys on the porch.

Great. Another cycle.

Bones waved Karl toward them, standing to go greet their final guest. "Howya doing?" he asked, extending one hand toward his otherself and taking the box with the other.

He sighed at the cycle. "Jim's gonna want to ride that later." And race, most likely but that went unsaid. Bones wondered if he should just pull out the regen units now.

"Hey, guys," Karl greeted them all with a grin, and Bones with a clap on the shoulder. "Sorry I'm late, I brought cupcakes. Hope they're not all smashed up. It's a pretty smooth ride, though," he added, with a fond look over his shoulder at the bike, "so they should be okay."

"Looks like we're all here," Chris observed, bouncing up excitedly from his seat in the living room. He looked past Karl as he walked out to greet him, staring at the bike parked next to the other cars. "Hey, that looks like the one from the movie." He shouldn't be surprised, remembering Karl's longing gazes at the one on set. Chris had offered him a ride, at which point they had been reminded pointedly that the cycle would be returned to the props department immediately after shooting.

"And you brought sweets. Excellent." He looked around at all of them with a broad smile. "This is really great. Thanks for inviting us," he added to Jim and Bones.

"No, thank you guys for coming." Bones looked around at his house, full of friends and felt so damn proud of what he and Jim had here. "You guys are our first guests here, and I'm really glad 'bout that."

"Anyone hungry?" he asked, hearing the siren call of the grill outside, whispering to him.

"That's Bones' signal that he's horny for the grill," Jim said with a smirk, laughing. "He finally let me use it for the first time last night." He stood up, stretching. "Glad to finally get to spend some time with the three of you."

"Hard to find time to socialize with people turning into cats and whatnot," Karl said amiably. No, he would never not be amused by that. "I can see why you guys got this place so far out. Nice and peaceful. It's fantastic." From where he'd just sat down, he could see palm forest, pristine sand, and turquoise surf. It was like a postcard.

Bones laughed at the 'cat' comment - it was pretty fucking funny. "Thanks," he told Karl, making sure everyone had a beer. "We like it, a lot."

The steaks and chicken were ready for the grill. "Before I get started with the grill," he glared a little at Jim for the 'horny' comment, "lemme make sure - none of y'all are vegetarians, are you?"

Jim whistled innocently, looking around like he had no idea what Bones was glaring at him for. "If you are, what the heck are you doing here?" Jim teased.

Chris bore the teasing cheerfully, having become accustomed to it since his adventure as a cat. "Just because you couldn't keep track of a tiny kitten..." He laughed along with the others, happy to have found the humor in the situation after that awkward time just after switching back.

Accepting the fresh beer with a nod of thanks, Chris had it halfway to his mouth before answering. "Not me," he assured Bones. The very idea of a grilled steak after weeks of unfamiliar or replicated food made his mouth water.

"I'm still not sure how everyone stands replicated food for such long periods of time," Zach admitted. "Maybe it's because you are used to it, but I can taste the difference no matter how hard I try. I guess taste was sacrificed in honor of having unlimited quantities of it."

"The novelty of eating something that's just appeared in a slot in the wall outweighs any taste issues for me," laughed Karl, popping the top off his bottle. Like the coffee, the beer was tasty on Risa, too. "Nothing like a good barbie, though."

Bones raised his bottle to Karl at that last statement. "Nothing beats that taste," grinning at Karl's accent. "We try and eat real food as often as possible, its just better for you."

"Anyway, its good to have you guys here before we left. Jim and I are going camping for a few days, sort of a tradition we do for the holidays." Bones threw the meat onto the grill and let them start cooking, the air filled with sizzling meat. "You guys should try it if you're at all interested in being outside, the area around here is perfect for that."
