Dinner with Paula had been therapeutic, of sorts. Driving out to Spock's house and unceremoniously stealing his cat had been equally fulfilling. The moment Bones touched his shoulder, Jim jerked hard. What he didn't expect was a yowl as he scared the hell out of a kitten he hadn't known as there, then his own matching howl as the kitten's claws dug through the thin material of the robe and into his bare thigh beneath. "What the fuck!?!" It came out of him, still thick with the remains of sleep but his eyes were wide in pain as he grabbed the kitten by the back of the neck a little unceremoniously.

Bones reached out for the cat. "Easy there," he said, taking her and setting her on the ground, out of the way of their feet as he reached out to steady Jim.

"Sorry, sorry 'bout that." Hadn't meant to scare him. "Hey," he added, looking over at Jim, hand on his shoulder, little smile on his face. "When you get back?"

Jim watched the kitten scatter out of the way in a rush and hide somewhere under their bed before he looked to Bones. He ignored the pain from the cat's claws in his thigh and licked his lips, trying to think of what to say when his heart did something like a flip at that smile on Bones' lips.

He just stepped forward and pulled Bones into a hug, sighing against his shoulder, not saying anything for the moment.

Bones hugged him back hard, pulling him close as he could. He breathed into Jim's neck, smelling the familiar scent of his throat and hair.

"Missed you so much." His arms held Jim that much tighter.
