"What the fuck!?!" It came out of him, still thick with the remains of sleep but his eyes were wide in pain as he grabbed the kitten by the back of the neck a little unceremoniously.

"Sorry, sorry 'bout that." Hadn't meant to scare him. "Hey," he added, looking over at Jim, hand on his shoulder, little smile on his face. "When you get back?"

He just stepped forward and pulled Bones into a hug, sighing against his shoulder, not saying anything for the moment.

"How'd it go?" he asked, his hands finding their way to Jim's face, as if he wanted physical reassurance that Jim was really there, in his arms. "You find him?"

Looking up, he lifted Jim's face, looking into his eyes. "Your head, it still hurt?" he wondered, thumbs rubbing slow circles into Jim's temples.
