The message came in from the bridge, and Bones jumped, even though he'd been waiting for it ever since he'd woken up.
Away team, beaming straight to sick bay.Everyone had been notified about the away team's departure while he was unconscious, and they had assembled in sickbay. Now turning to look at them, he took a deep breath and nodded

She carefully turned his arm to examine it. There was a large puncture wound - the area around it was swollen and looked to be a bruise forming. There was a tiny trickle of blood dripping down the side.
Taking a deep breath, Meira pulled out her tricorder and ran it along his arm. Toxin levels were high - whatever had hit him, it had been tainted with... something. She frowned. It looked like a sedative, but not one she had seen before.
She connected the tricorder to a larger terminal, to dig deeper in case it was a rarely-documented kind, hopefully buried within the database.
In the meanwhile, she cleaned her hands and put on a fresh pair of gloves. Taking a moist cloth, she dabbed at the wound, cleaning off the blood. She then washed it off again, this time with an antiseptic - there wasn't any signs of bacterial or viral infection setting in, but it was still a likely occurrence. As she finished wrapping the wound in gauze, the tricorder beeped.
Substance unknown. Similar in properties and formula to sedative ND-355.
Meira frowned. ND-355 wasn't dealt with very often - there wasn't much info, let alone anything useful for the sedative in Sam's system.
She looked down at Sam. She couldn't do much for him; the counteractives weren't guaranteed to have any effect.
Still, she prepared the hypospray. As she pressed it to his neck, she began some mental calculations. Considering the small amount of data, and the fact that this sedative was different from the data she had - she honestly had no clue when he'd wake up.
She programmed the system to alert her if any changes occured, and began entering the data from the new sedative into the database.

Sam's eyes snapped open. Things were clear enough now that he could tell he was in sickbay on the Enterprise. It was calmer now, but it might have just seemed so because he was able to track movement again.
There was a dull ache from his shoulder. Slowly he remembered he had been wounded there, and raised his other hand to touch the bandage. Pressing on it wasn't too painful, but it was still extremely tender.

"Hello um-" she glanced at the PADD file again. "Sam."
Kirk? George Kirk, at that?
She shook her head. Now was not the time.
"How're you feeling?" she asked as she picked up her tricorder again and began scanning.

He rubbed his hands over his face.
"Where's Doctor McCoy? I need to talk to him."

"I'd give you a pain hypo, but it'd probably mix badly with the sedative and knock you out again. Can you manage?"
She paused, considering his question.
"Doctor McCoy is most likely with another patient. Can it wait at all?"
Reply
"It can wait. Just tell him I want to see him when he's got a minute."

"I didn't get a chance to send a message. Things didn't go as planned... How are they?"

"But- he's been, he's got these markings, like tattoos all over his skin. Gonna have to work on that later. Your dad," Bones rubbed the back of his head, frowning. "Won't kid you, sounds like it was pretty touch and go for a while there."

"But George is stable now, right?"

McCoy paused. "I'll take you to see your brother, if you want. He's unconscious, will be for the rest of the night, but if it would make you feel better..." He shrugged. Everyone was different about these things.

Bones pointed to a bed at the end, the figure lying on it looking small and childlike in the sterile white bedding. He held out a robe for Sam, much like the one he was wearing, to put in over the medical gown he'd been given when they treated him.

He watched Jim's sedated form, so helpless looking in the middle of everything. Sam wanted to be there, to touch him and make sure it was really him on that bed. His brother was suffering and there was nothing he could do but be with him.
At least Jim wasn't in any pain at the moment.

Bones reached down and tenderly touched Kirk's hair, tousling it gently in his fingers. "Looks like hell but he's the strongest bastard I ever met." The fond look on Bones face, if was as if he didn't see the tattoos anymore, he was just so happy to have him back and alive. "Come talk to him, it'll be good for him. Just don't touch his skin," he added softly.

"Of course he's a tough bastard, he's a Kirk. We're not exactly known for going 'gentle into that good night'."
He watched McCoy play with Jim's hair and was struck with a longing to touch his brother's skin, but followed the Doctor's instructions.
"Glad to see you're back, Jimmy."
