This fight would be going so much better if Shark didn't have his stupid hands wrapped around her throat.

Tula kicked him in the chest as hard as she could, trying to break his grip with one hand while clawing at his eyes with the other. She needed to break lose now before her fight made Garth lose his.

Garth isn't going to lose his fight. He wants to take Manta down fast, so he can help Tula with her opponent. The Shark means business... he usually takes on the Green Lantern.

He's got Manta on the ropes now... a couple more punches should take him down.

Tula's kicking was getting a little wild at this point. She was terrified -- not just because she was losing, but because Shark was going to kill Garth when he was through with her.

She tried to push those thoughts aside, knowing that Shark had fear-enhancing powers, knowing that he was using them to make her weaken, but she couldn't stop seeing Garth's horrified face in her mind.

It wasn't going to end like this. She was not going to let it end like this!

She kicked more, unaware that Chemo was busily churning and poisoning the water behind her.

Garth knocks Manta down, and he turns to go help Tula...

and a look of terror crosses his face as he sees the brackish chemicals wash over his lover.

"Tula?! OH GOD!"

He ignores the Shark, fleeing the chemical onslaught. He holds his breath and swims in at top speed, grabbing her in is arms and kicking out. Even without breathing, he can feel it burning his eyes and skin.

And then he's out, with Tula in his arms.

He waits outside the surgeon's room. They'll do everything they can. He knows they will.

He imagines her smile. Her laugh. Her moan. Her touch...

It can't be over. He can't have talked to her for the last time. He can't.

It can't be over just like that. They'll save her. He promised. They won't let him lie to her. He did it in time. He had to have...

He hasn't told her anything he wanted to yet. Their life is just beginning. They're getting married -- they'll have a child together. This can't be over now.

It's not right.

There's a presence in the room. She's the only thing that's real.

Tula knew very well what was going on.

"Any chance that I can stay if I dig my heels in and shout?" she asked, only half-joking. She bit her lips, looking at Garth, then looked back at the presence. "I'm still needed here."

Death smiles a little sadly. "Everyone gets -" Then the entity blinks. "Wow. The time shift feels weird."
