The realization
Bruce has been upset. In fact, he's been inconsolable for quite a while now. Alfred made it through surgery with flying colors, and he was on strict instructions to rest. Even though Bruce hasn't stopped patrolling, he certainly has cut down on his hours. He's made sure to be around the Manor more, just in case Alfred needed a hand.
There has been a lot on his mind too, things that Bruce hasn't thought or felt or even considered in quite a long time. Some of these things, were ignored since before Selina. Things like... his friends. Or lack there of. Or how he hadn't had lunch with Clark and Lois in years, or how he couldn't even name the last time he'd slept late.
There was a lot on Bruce's mind when Kathy found him, down in the Batcave. This evening though, he's actually still wearing his civi clothing. Bruce doesn't intend to patrol tonight. (Insert gasps here.)
