Another reason to enjoy living in New Jersey

I'm sooooo glad my state tax dollars are being spent wisely. From the Asbury Park Press:

Bill Would Ban Trans Fats From New Jersey Restuarants
by Andrea Alexander

TRENTON - State Sen. Ellen Karcher plans to introduce a bill that she believes could lead to better health for New Jersey residents by banning trans fats from restaurants.

The ban would replace partially hydrogenated oil - which is commonly used in cooking and commercial food production - with heart-healthy alternatives such as mono- and polyunsaturated vegetable oils.

Karcher said the bill is designed to fight childhood obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

"Study upon study has shown the health risks from consuming trans fats, including heightened cholesterol and increased risk of cardiac arrest," said Karcher, D-Monmouth.

She said she modeled the ban after a proposal to eliminate trans fats by 2008 from New York City restaurants and food carts.

Invented as a substitute for natural animal fats such as butter or lard, trans fats have been blamed by doctors for helping cause obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Trans fats sometimes are used in foods such as french fries and cookies.

Karcher's proposal has met resistance from the New Jersey Restaurant Association.

"We're very distressed that once again the industry and the public are facing an encroachment on their rights," said Deborah Dowdell, the association president.

Karcher said she wants to work with the restaurant industry to craft the legislation.

"You can still go eat your french fries," Karcher said. "You can still eat your cookies."

But Karcher wants to make the french fries and cookies more healthful.

"If we can front-load efforts and make sure people are healthier to begin with, we can save health care dollars," Karcher said.

Translation: Banning certain foods from restaurants is a hell of a lot cheaper for us than actually finding a way to provide cheaper health care for those who can't afford it. Because it's not like we tax gym memberships or anything. Oh wait a minute, we do now.

Not that it's a good idea to eat trans fats, but whatever happened to having choice? Nobody should eat french fries, potato skins, and fried oreos every day, but there should be the freedom to enjoy such food if we want to. Oh wait a sec...I forgot, we in New Jersey are too stupid to be able to choose anything for ourselves. Hence why we had to put up with Dick Codey.

So that's two Democrats I have to remember not to vote for now.
