My Thoughts On Gargoyles Season Three and My Next Show

Oct 26, 2024 14:12

I finished the final season of Gargoyles last night. I would say this last season was the weakest of the three, but it wasn't bad, it was just kind of weird. Something was off about it. They switched animation studios and used yet another studio for the second to last episode, which looked even weirder even if it technically had better animation. This season was dubbed “The Goliath Chronicles.” He gives a little narration at the beginning of each episode reflecting the theme for the story. That was fine. It gave it kind of a noir feel. Quality wise the episodes were mostly average, although my favorite was probably “For May It Come True,” where Goliath becomes a human again and it's this It's A Wonderful Life style kind of episode. A lot of shows, especially kids shows, had an episode like that.

This season introduced the Quarrymen as the main antagonists. As the gargoyles were now revealed to humans, they became objects of hate. It had an X-Men feel in that respect, and that was the main sort of arc. There's something threatening about how easy it would be to kill the gargoyles during the day when they're completely vulnerable. The Quarrymen didn't exactly take that opportunity though. I guess then the show would be over. They were a pretty decent replacement of a villainous group after Xanatos. I never bought the “Xanatos is good now” in season three. He was barely in the last season, but I guess he was serious about his change of heart. I think I preferred him when he was more of a schemer. Although the last stunt he pulled to save the gargoyles was pretty good.

I wasn't sure how this show was going to wrap up. I didn't know if it was going to get a proper ending because I assume it got canceled. I did think it had a good ending. There was no cliffhanger or anything like that, and I'm happy that they made Goliath and Elisa's relationship official during this season. However, some threads have been left lingering. The main one for me is Demona. I was hoping she'd pop up one more time and get redeemed. The fact that she never was just makes it all the more tragic and disappointing. She's just left as this sad, pitiful, hateful creature. Perhaps if the show continued, she would have been redeemed eventually. It's obvious she cared for her daughter. She just hated humans and Goliath too much. Too late for redemption now unless the show is revived. I have heard last year they announced a live-action adaptation, but I don't know if that's still in the works. I don't know how that would go. It would probably be better if they revived this show X-Men '97 style. That would be terrific. They could bring the voice actors back too if they wanted, with the exception of Ed Asner. RIP. There are comics too. I could always check those out.

Overall, I loved Gargoyles. The writing was great, the twists were some of the best, and the lore was fascinating. Not to mention the characters. I'm really going to miss those gargoyles, and Elisa. I did feel sad when it was over, and I'm still sad. What an amazing show. I may revisit other Disney Afternoon shows at another time.

Now it's time to talk about what show I'm going to watch next. So, I pushed Gargoyles ahead of what I had originally planned to watch because the Star Trek connection pulled me in. However, soon it will be time. I'm going to start watching Stargate SG-1 and actually by extension Stargate: Atlantis. I've wanted to watch this for a while. Maybe watching TNG kicked off my whole wanting to watch more space opera sagas? And I know that some Star Trek actors show up in that show too. I'm told I would like it if I like Star Trek, but I'm going to do my best not to compare the two because I'm sure they're two different things. I am excited about it though.

It's going to be a little tricky however because of the crossovers, so I'm probably going to be watching the two series in tandem. I'm going to have to rely on a watch order list, so I don't get confused. I don't think the crossovers start happening until season eight of SG-1 though. So, I won't have to worry about it for a while. Before I dive into that series though, I will be rewatching the movie first. I have seen the movie once before a long time ago, but I don't really remember it. That's the extent of my knowledge of the Stargate universe. I think there's a new show or reboot too. Movies? Anyway, I'll worry about that when I get to it. This is going to be another long commitment. Even longer than TNG. I'm going in with minimal expectations, but I'm hoping to enjoy this new ride I'm going to embark on.

I am getting ahead of myself though. Before I get into Stargate, I have a few backlog shows to go through. There's also season two of Arcane coming out next month, and any other little things to watch whether it's a documentary or movie release. After all that, which I don't think will take super long, I will begin my journey into the Stargate universe. I can't wait!
