I finished Barrow Hill: The Dark Path yesterday. It was yet another game I abused a walkthrough for. It seemed like the kind of game you probably needed to take notes for, which I didn't. That's all right though. This is a sequel to the first game, but it pretty much stands on its own. I don't really remember the first game, but that didn't matter because this was a whole new story, and it's perfectly fine to play this game if you never played the first one. So, the story centers around a group of young adults, a cult, and a ritual gone wrong. A woman from the group named Mia becomes possessed by the witch called Baibin, and is wandering around the forest now attacking the others. You come in as a journalist I think, to investigate and reverse what went wrong.
The game is plenty spooky and atmospheric with wonderful ambient sounds, but it's never outright scary. I think maybe I jumped once. The area you explore in is pretty small, but fairly easy to get turned around in the woods. Or maybe that's just me. The puzzles were pretty good, but again it was my fault for not taking notes. There was no puzzle I looked at though and would say it was a poorly designed puzzle, so that was good. The game is pretty old school. No autosaves, no hotspot finder, hints or anything. I did enjoy the story too, but I do have to make a comment on the voice acting. There was one character's voice that really drove me up the wall. I think the kid's last name was Tindle. He's supposed to sound like a teenager, but it's the worst impression of an adult pretending to sound like a teenager ever. I know that Jonathan Boakes voiced him as well. Sorry man, but that was bad. The only other issue I had was that the subtitles didn't seem to work. I checked to have the subtitles on, but it didn't work. I don't know why. I like having subtitles because of auditory processing issues sometimes, and it helps me comprehend things better. Other than that, I quite liked this game and its old school first person adventure game feel. Like the old games made by The Adventure Company, which is now defunct. So, it felt kind of nostalgic for me. Here's a screenshot. This was a bit of a junkyard or something.
Now I've started a game called Slice of Sea, and it's a puzzle game. I don't know much more than that. I can't even tell what the story is about, but I kind of like it so far.
