I “finished” Ahnayro: The Dream World. There wasn't actually an ending as far as I know, but I think I did everything I was able to do. I tried to make sure of that. There wasn't an ending triggered. I almost rage quit this game before I started because there's absolutely no explanation given about what you were supposed to be doing. There didn't seem to be anything to interact with, just images with narration. I had to look up what the hell the deal was and it turns out that the images with narration and riddles are actually clues you're supposed to research on the internet to find the answers for. Oh. Finally, I was able to move forward.
So, I don't know if I can really describe this game, but there's this kind of diagram thing with different nodes and the nodes link to different dreams that give you clues. Then there is a wheel with letters that you click on to spell out the answer or what you think the answer might be. I didn't see that wheel at first. It's probably just the lighting situation in my room, but it was hard to see, which added to my annoyance with this game. If you have the right answer, the node is completed, but if you're wrong, the letters turn red, and you have to try again. There are multiple sections with multiple parts, and what you're doing is trying to dissect people's dreams. There are a lot of references to dark periods in history and occult kind of stuff. It was kind of interesting, but I wasn't really invested and I didn't want to read passages and passages of text trying to find the answer to the current clue I was working on. Some of the time it was easy to figure out what the answer was and other times I don't know how the hell you would have come up with the answer trying to Google it. I had no choice but to look up to see what the correct answer was. And that really frustrated me.
The whole using the internet to find the answers was something I didn't really like because I felt like it took me out of the game and left me very detached from it. The only graphics in the game is that diagram and clue images. There is no world, no characters (apart from the people describing their dreams). It just didn't work for me. It was more frustrating than fun. It's pretty cheap and takes time to play, but no. I couldn't connect with it at all. But have a screenshot of the only thing you really see in this game. Well, this is an example of one of the clues you get that you then have to try to research on the internet to find the answer.
Now I'm doing something that I rarely ever do anymore, and that is to replay a game. My game of choice: Gray Matter. Why this one? Well, I follow Jane Jensen (The talented creator of this game and Gabriel Knight) on Facebook. She rarely posts, but she recently shared an article from someone talking about Gray Matter, and it made me want to replay it again. So, that's why. I do remember enjoying this game, but I don't remember a whole lot about it, so it will almost be like new again. I doubt I will share too much of my thoughts on it when I finish, but stay tuned.
