King's Quest Chapter Five

I finished the final chapter of King's Quest. A pretty nice bittersweet way to round off the series. This chapter was called The Good Knight. King Graham is on his last legs, but the magic mirror revealed to him he still had one last adventure, which turned out to be a misinterpretation. He begins telling Gwendolyn about the details he may have forgotten to tell her about his past adventures. The only trouble is he has problems remembering, which actually affects the gameplay. Early on, the directional controls get inverted, for example, to play off his confusion. I thought it was a glitch at first, but no it was intentional, and it was kind of tricky. I could have done without that. The episode is kind of disjointed, but with some good final puzzles, and at least no QTE. We run into Manny again after being tricked into changing him back into a human. He's back to his true form, along with Mordack at his side. The two have teamed up to make the elderly King Graham's life miserable. Manny puts our king through tests of strength, speed, and wit, and it's really all about Graham proving he's still capable. The climax puts King Graham into an unwinnable situation however because Manny doesn't play fair, and ultimately Graham chooses to sacrifice his life for his family. Then Manny winds up beating him around a bit before Mordack decides enough was enough, because Graham had helped him the past, he returned the favor and Manny is destroyed. Manny = grade A bastard, Mordack = more redeemable.

There was a nostalgic little dream sequence in this chapter, which I just loved. It takes you through scenes from King's Quest I, King's Quest V, and King's Quest VI.

So, we had to say goodbye to King Graham, presumably the reason he was dying was because of that sacrifice he made and not of old age. Sad way for him to go out because it means Manny won, and I don't know how I feel about that. He had visions of Achaka before he kicked the bucket. Oh Achaka. Now it's up to Gwendolyn to take the mantle as the new queen and continue adventuring in her grandfather's honor.

Overall I really enjoyed this series despite some unevenness and a few frustrating QTE parts. It's a beautiful game both in how it looks and emotionally as well. The Odd Gentlemen did a fine job of respecting the original King's Quest games, while bringing something new to the table. Also great job to the talented all-star voice cast, whom enhanced the gameplay experience. Now, I hear there will also be an epilogue too, so I'll be looking out for that one. In the meantime, here's a screenshot. The whole family is together, ready to say their final goodbyes. I do believe the royal family of Daventry is the best video game family.

I'm going to be playing Batman next, soon.
