A Look At The Number 1 Box Office Films So Far This Year (Kinda Sad)

Apr 15, 2009 11:13

I have nothing really to talk about, so I decided to talk about this. I've always felt that movies have been on the decline in quality, but it seems especially bad this year, or at least this first quarter of the year. Sure there have been really great ones so far like Watchmen (which was a number 1) and Coraline (which wasn't) I find it pretty sad to see what movies actually do make number 1 in a lot of cases. So, here's a look at the number ones of the year so far

January 4th: Marley & Me- $24.2 million
January 11th: Gran Torino- $29.4 million
January 18th: Paul Blart: Mall Cop- $31.8 million
February 1st: Taken- $24.7 million
February 8th: He's Just Not That Into You- $27.7 million
February 15th: Friday the 13th- $40.5 million
February 22nd: Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail (for two weeks)- $41 million and $16.1 million
March 8th: Watchmen- $55.2 million
March 15th: Race to Witch Mountain- $24.4 million
March 22nd: Knowing- $24.8 million
March 29th: Monsters vs. Aliens- $59.3 million
April 5th: Fast & Furious- $70.9 million
April 12th: Hannah Montana: The Movie- $32.3 million

I mean both Fast & Furious and Monsters vs. Aliens made more money than Watchmen? Seriously? I know it's probably because Watchmen was rated R, but still...hmm...if I compiled this list on quality, several of these would not be considered number one in my opinion. I know money earned does not a good movie make, but I think this list of number ones so far is pretty pathetic.

Grant it, it's not summer yet, which has most of the movies I'm eager to see, so I know things will be quite a bit different in the coming months. Just wish there were better movies coming out early in the year. There were only a few that I actually wanted to see these first few months, the rest looked like crap. It used to be every week there was at least one movie I at least had a vague inclination to see, but not anymore.

It's the sad state of Hollywood, that I don't expect to see improve anytime in the near future.

box office, movies
