Just a warning: This might become a long topic on my obsessions.
I was up at 3 in the morning, but I didn't want to sleep. I had an urge to draw roller coaster tracks. I decided I would try drawing through my visual memories. I don't normally draw that way, but I probably should because I think visualization helps me draw a bit better. I started off drawing the Tivoli track by playing photos of the Tivoli track in my head. I was actually pretty accurate in the design. The Tivoli in case you're wondering is that Ladybug coaster from the game Roller Coaster Tycoon. Yes, it's a real roller coaster. You'd normally find them in Europe and I would bet RCT is European based. Then I went on to try drawing a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop. They have a very particular look to them. See example, Viper from King's Island.
My attempt was a little crude, but I had the basic idea. Then I went on to try drawing the front of an Arrow train and a couple of the cars. That didn't quite turn out so well, but I did still get the basic idea.
Then I decided I would try drawing some Disneyland rides from memory. I started off with the Pirates of the Caribbean boat. I think I was most pleased with the results of that one. :) I attempted the Starspeeder 3000, but all I was able to get was the basic shape. I did the Monorail quite well and a car from Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Then I did the Skyway and People Mover pretty accurately for having not seen them in ages. That's about it.
You know I could just visit Disneyland in my head if I wanted to. I've been there so many times, it's like a second home to me. I can imagine myself walking down the path, standing in the lines, and riding the rides. I can play that all in my head without even going there.
Overall I think I did an all right job drawing the rides, but I probably would have done even better if I was copying them from photos. I loved to copy pictures when I was a kid. I would mainly copy Disney characters, then I went on to drawing all the Pokemon and some Digimon before eventually copying dinosaurs from my many dinosaur books. I was pretty darn good at it too. Sadly, I don't really copy drawings anymore, but I might try copying some roller coasters and see how that turns out.
BTW I did go to the bookstore and I picked up The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. :D
