My night (cont.)

Dec 19, 2009 09:54

I timed it. I got 26 minutes of sleep last night. She did not have a good night. Kicked and screamed alot, foaled up her I.V., wet the bed, tried to bite the nice nurse and had enough "calm down" shots to subdue a 200 pound biker,.(to quote the nice nurse.)
It had to remind me of other nights spent in the hospital watching swirl around light posts. The first time was the night before Mindy was born. I had been put in the hosptial early because my blood pressure was being strange. The nurses checked my early and said that nothing was going to happen that night. My tummy felt a little crampy so they brought me a bed pan to sit on. I sat on it and watched the snow swirl along Carpenter Street.
(This was in the hospital in Iron Mountain.) I was the only lady in the maternity wing so it was dead quiet. When the nurses finally came to check on me again at 5:30 or so they decided for lack of anything better to do, they'd check to see if by chance I had dialated. "Oh my goodness," one said.
"There's the head. Why didn't you tell us you were in labor."
"I didn't know." I said. "I just felt crampy. Ummmm, I think I want to push now."
"Don't you dare. The doctor isn't here yet."
"That man is never here when I need him. There must be a doctor somewhere in the hospital. I'm gonna push now."
"At least wait 'til we get you down to the labor room." By then we were moving fast down the hall. "Maybe you should call my husband."
"We did. Now, into the labor room."
"Don't bother. Take me right into the delivery room. I'm going to push."
"Don't push. The doctor isn't here."
"You can't tell me you two haven't caught your fair share of babies. Get ready to play catch."
They got me in the stirrups, the head nurse came up from emergency and took a quick peek. "You might as well let her push. The baby is coming. That sure looks like a big head. Oops. She's tearing alot."
Just then, the doctor and Dave ran into together. I pushed hard and out popped Minderz cake. Then the doctor sewed for a looonnnggg time.
That was my first watchful winter night. It had a great outcome. More to follow. Next time Mommy goes back to sleep.
