voting your gut

It's become something of a trend, I fear -- people, especially Democrats these days, going into the voting booth undecided. One man in Ohio was quoted in a recent news article saying he hadn't made up his mind until he saw the ballot. "I just went with my gut -- who I felt more comfortable with," he said. With, I imagine, a tone of pride to his voice. As if not making being able to make a rational decision is something to be proud of.

Maybe it's a result of being urged for years to "follow your heart." People seem to think that if they turn off their brains their instincts will lead them right. What foolishness is that?

Vote your conscience, by all means. Vote your beliefs, your values, your morals. Vote character. Vote issues. Whatever. But do it with all your rational capacities, please. Not your gut "feeling." Voting is a sacred duty, a weighty responsibility. Nothing less than your full mental power should be brought to bear. It's not blackjack in a casino.

Look too closely into anyone's gut and all you get is s***!
