Summary: Everybody hates Shakespeare.
“I don’t like that one,” Rapunzel announced.
He glanced up from his book. No, her book. He didn’t read poetry by choice. Not unless she requested that he read a bunch of sonnets out loud because she liked the sound of his voice.
He had a nice view, sprawled out on the couch with his head in her lap, and he watched her for a moment as she pondered the ceiling, her fingers twisting in his hair.
“No, I don’t like it at all.”
Glad for the reprieve, he dropped the book onto his chest, laying it down so as to mark his place. Even if she didn’t like this one, she’d surely want another. “Why’s that.”
“She’s like summer, because she’s pretty like the sun, right?”
“I think it’s about a guy,” he muttered, tempted to pick up the book again and check, but it didn’t matter because Rapunzel wasn’t really listening anymore.
“She's like a summer's day and as long as there’s a special poem, she’ll stay alive and young forever? No.” She shook her head, “I don’t think so.”
Eugene blinked up at her, not entirely sure what to say. “Well, that’s one interpretation.”
She set her jaw decidedly. “I don’t like it.”
“So you’ve said.”
“Do you like it?”
“Uh. No. Not particularly,” he said, her renewed acknowledgment of his presence causing him to momentarily falter. “I express my unending love for a girl like a summer’s day differently.”
“How?”
He thought about it for a moment, his fingers drumming against the soft cover of her book before he shrugged and opened it once more. “I’m sure I’ll think of something. Something spectacular. Way better than a poem. Like nothing you - or anyone else - has ever seen before. And you’ll gasp and go, ‘Oh my God! This must be love!’ …You want to hear another?”
She giggled with a nod, and returned to stroking his hair, listening to the sound of his voice as he read to her.
