Summary: When all seems lost, Dany's faithful knight brings succor.

The Dothraki claim that someday ghost grass will cover the entire world, and then all life will end, Ser Jorah told her once upon a time which seems so long ago now. If the end of the entire world has not come, Daenerys is sure the end of hers has. Grass, nothing but grass, stretching out before her and behind her and beside her, inescapable. She will drown in the Drothraki Sea, she is certain of it.

"I've got in over my head, Jorah," she whispers to him in the night, his face, above hers, obscured and shifting through the pools in her eyes, or the deep waters in which she is submerged, pulled by some tide ever further downward. "My councilors think me a child, and would make me a pawn in their game of thrones. I have been betrayed by love--but not, as I thought, by you."

"Never by me, my Queen."

Jorah's big hand breaks through the surface of the water, and Daenerys stretches her own toward it. His fingers remain just beyond her grasp as the light refracts through the waves and tricks her perception of distance.

"They call me Queen, or Your Grace," she says, sadly. "I look at my face in the glass, and find I have forgotten my name."

"I know you still, Daenerys. Always."

"Dany," she says, inviting him to further familiarity rather than rebuking him for taking liberties as she used. "No one calls me Dany anymore. There is no one left who--" She leaves off with a little cry of pain as her chest constricts, then burns, as with a sudden flash of flame; she is not the dragon she thought she was. "I feel as if great wave were crashing down on me, so that I cannot breathe."

His hand catches hers, so strong, so gentle. "Then let me help you to breathe--my Dany."

He pulls her up toward the surface, up to him, and as her head breaks free of the waters, he kisses her. Needily, Dany sweeps her tongue into his mouth, relief flooding her as she realizes that her knight's soft lips taste not of the sea, but of sweat, and of tears, and the salt of the earth. The burning in her lungs is extinguished as he breathes free air into her until she floats, so light, upon the sunlit waters. She lies motionless, rocked in the cradle of his arms or on the waves, she doesn't know which, until she draws deep, steady breaths and rests assured that she won't be lost though she will awaken to find him gone, to find he was never there at all.

When she rides again, she sees water, not grass, before, behind, beside.

In her dreams, Jorah's love is like an ocean.
