Jia had learned something of fire, despite her lack of bending. No child of the Fire Nation could avoid it. When she saw the horizon lit with an angry red glow and the air smell of smoke, on the night of the comet, she gathered Tom-Tom to her breast and waited, ready to flee with the refugees.
It could be the army coming to retake New Ozai. But that much fire, even wielded, would burn friends and foes. She'd hope for the Fire Nation's victory, but she wasn't willing to turn her family into a burnt offering on the army's pyre.
