This Was the Golden Globes 2017
Well, the Hollywood Foreign Press did something Rickon Stark never thought to do: zigzagged. I was wrong on so many fronts. I do love the Golden Globes in that the Hollywood Foreign Press tends to stray outside of what is the predictable winner but dang, they really went off-chart. Marhershala Ali to date has won 23 awards for “Moonlight” but not the Golden Globe. “Game of Thrones” typically wins Best Drama and with season six being, IMO, their best season yet it’s a shocker that they lost to “The Crown”. I mean...”The Crown” stars “Doctor Who (has no eyebrows)” Matt Smith and not someone dashing like Iain Glen!

*The show itself only got better when it didn’t rely on Jimmy Fallon as a host and ran as an occasional efficient machine. That fake schtick with his monitor breaking down leaving him to riff as if he could ever do anything without a teleprompter or cue cards (his entire run on SNL) was the only joke. The joke being that there was glitch in the system a’la Mariah Carey’s NYE incident (The Golden Globes, like the “Rockin’ New Years Eve” is produced by Dick Clark Prods.)
The real embarrassment came first during the red carpet coverage and then during the show when twice “Hidden Figures” was called “Hidden Fences” (by Jenna Bush Hager (pre-show) and Michael Keaton (during). Michael Keaton who rolled off tons of dialogue for “Birdman” couldn’t read the prompter to see that it is called “Hidden Figures”?
Even John Legend wasn’t safe
The deficiencies as always is with the written word. The painful banter given to Sofia Vegara where she “mispronounces” “annual” for “anal”. I guess she’ll never tire of exploiting her accent and having writers treat it like a joke. It feels really tone deaf coming days after “Rogue One”s Diego Luna shared a message from a fan who told him about how awed her father was that Luna speaks with an accent and is starring one of the most successful films of the past year.
The Golden Globes does not do a death montage but they did a very brief tribute to Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. I found it odd that they made the actors pitch their own films for the Film categories when usually they get other actors to do it but they had Casey Affleck intro “Manchester by the Sea” but had Jake Gyllenhaal intro “Deadpool” when Ryan Reynolds was in the audience!
Viola Davis was the bringer of two great speeches: her own acceptance speech for Best Supporting and her introduction of Meryl Streep. Meryl gave the best speech a call to action against cruelty and lack of respect and acceptance of foreigners and the press. Something that had Deplorables and GOPs alike in arms on Twitter like their toad king Trump. With Meghan McCain chiding “Hollywood” for speeches such as Streeps that made voters vote for Trump in the first place.
Ryan Gosling gave a personal thank you to his wife Eva Mendes bringing home what we always know: we never know what struggle a person is going through.
The Guardian has a great feature titled “My Family Values” and in a recent one Alfred Molina disclosed that his wife has advanced Alzheimer’s and that he had to place her in a care facility two years ago. He acknowledged that from the stories he heard in support group and therapy he is in a better situation than most. He can financially handle this. But while financially it’s not a worry, it’s still a stressful and painful situation to be in.
